In the world of T20 cricket, no batter has come close to matching the greatness of Chris Gayle. But Caribbean opener Brandon King has added an exceptional feather in his T20I crown, leaving the Universe Boss behind.

As the cricket world is enjoying thrilling T20I action between West Indies and Sri Lanka, King became only the third Caribbean batter to complete 2000 runs in the shortest format, a milestone that Gayle failed to achieve during his international career.

Brandon King outshines Chris Gayle in T20Is

Just after the IPL 2026 ended, fans are watching some unmissable international encounters as the stars return to their national duties.

The West Indies are facing Sri Lanka in a thrilling white-ball series. After a heartbreaking end to the three-match ODI series, the Men from the Caribbean made a fierce comeback in the shortest format.

While facing the Lankan opponents in the first encounter of the T20I series, West Indies opener Brandon King scripted a historic feat in T20Is. King played a small yet impactful innings of 37 runs off 22 balls, helping his side chase a modest total in the series opener.

With the exciting innings, Brandon King became only the third West Indies batter to breach the 2000-run mark in the shortest format. The milestone turned even more memorable as he moved ahead of Universe Boss Chris Gayle, who couldn’t achieve the feat in his T20I career.

In a 79-match T20I career, Gayle scored 1899 runs along with two centuries and 14 half-centuries. Despite a stunning T20I career, the Universe Boss narrowly missed out on becoming part of the elite 2000-run club in T20Is for the West Indies.

Most T20I runs for West Indies: Who are ahead of Brandon King?

Over the years, the West Indies have produced T20I giants who ruled the cricket world with their excellence in the shortest format. Yet when the conversation turns to pure destruction, Gayle still stands above the rest.

Despite that, there are only two West Indies batters before Brandon King who have passed the 2000-run mark in the T20I format for the nation. Ace batter Nicholas Pooran is standing at the top of the list as he scored 2275 runs in 106 T20I matches with 13 half-centuries.

Another West Indies great, Rovman Powell, is standing in the second position of the list as he scored 2271 runs in 118 T20Is.

King has made a steady start in the ongoing T20I series, and if he enjoys a memorable campaign, he could climb to the top and become West Indies’ highest run-scorer in T20I history.

West Indies eye a series win against Sri Lanka

The three-match T20I series could not have started in a better way for the West Indies as they pulled off a stunning victory in the opening encounter.

While bowling first, Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph’s stunning bowling bundled out the opponent for 147 runs.

While chasing down the total, Brandon King and Shai Hope’s 67-run opening stand gave a huge boost to the side.

In front of classic Caribbean dominance, Sri Lankan bowlers looked helpless as they suffered a 7-wicket defeat. After taking the lead in the series, West Indies will be eyeing a clean sweep as the 2nd T20I match is all set to be played on June 13.
