The Bangladesh Women’s team received a heavy five-wicket larruping at the hands of a strong Indian side in match number 23 of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Batting first, Bangladesh bowlers failed to contain the Indian rampage in the second innings of the match.

The outcome marked Bangladesh’s second defeat in four matches of the tournament to remain fourth on the six-team Group 1 points table. With just two wins and two defeats from four games, here we take a look at Bangladesh’s updated semifinal qualification scenario after their latest setback against India Women.

Bangladesh’s qualification scenario for T20 Women’s World Cup 2026 semifinals

The race for securing a spot in the semifinal of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has become significantly tougher for the Bangladesh Women’s team. Under the leadership of Nigar Sultana, the team needs a near-perfect finish, as well as expect a slew of exterior results to go their way in a bid to secure a top four spot.

For starters, Bangladesh Women need to defeat South Africa in their upcoming final Group 1 match of the tournament. Moreover, Bangladesh will also hope for the Proteas Women to lose their impending fixture against Netherlands.

In such a scenario, South Africa will remain stranded at four points from four games, while Bangladesh will move to six points. However, South Africa will certainly fancy themselves in upstaging Netherlands, forcing Bangladesh to topple the Proteas in terms of NRR instead since both these teams will be tied at six points.

With Australia Women already qualified for the semifinals, Bangladesh’s next biggest adversary is India. Nigar Sultana and co. will be hoping that Team India loses its final Group 1 fixture against Australia by a huge margin.

India’s current NRR of 2.268, however, is leagues ahead of both, South Africa (-0.546) and Bangladesh (-0.849). Even if India loses the match by a world record margin, chances are that Bangladesh’s NRR might not even get close to that of the ‘Women in Blue’.

In short, Bangladesh's semifinal qualification now hinges on a series of near-miraculous results. Even if other outcomes fall in their favor, overturning their inferior net run rate appears an almost impossible task, leaving their last-four hopes all but out of their hands.
