Bangladesh punished by ICC [Source: AFP]
The Bangladesh cricket team has been punished by the ICC for their misconduct in the opening match of the UAE ODI tri-series this past weekend. Notably, Bangladesh also lost its match to Zimbabwe by a demoralizing 99-run margin in Abu Dhabi.
With Towhid Hridoy serving as Bangladesh’s interim captain in place of injured Litton Das, the team fell short on the over-rate meter and was fittingly sanctioned by ICC match referee David Gilbert.
Bangladesh punished for slow over-rate under new captain
Towhid Hridoy started off his captaincy tenure on a forgettable note against Zimbabwe. Stepping in as a replacement for regular skipper Litton Das in the opening match of the UAE ODI tri-series 2026 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, his team lost to Zimbabwe by a huge 99-run margin.
Notably, the Bangladesh team has now been punished by the ICC for maintaining a slow over-rate in the game. As per the ICC official website, the team fell one over short of the target after taking time allowances into consideration.
David Gilbert of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees has fined the Bangladesh team five percent of their match fees, in accordance to the Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
Captain Towhid Hridoy accepts wrongdoing, to continue as skipper in series
Bangladesh’s interim captain Towhid Hridoy has since pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction from the ICC match referee. With Hridoy accepting the sanction, there was no need for a formal hearing.
On-field umpire Allahuddien Paleker and Izatullah Safi and third umpire Ahsan Raza had also levelled the charges in accordance with the ICC rule book.
With Towhid Hridoy’s Bangladesh team suffering a huge defeat and coping a fine on his captaincy debut, it is imperative for the cricketer to regroup quickly and guide his side to a stronger showing in the remainder of the 2026 UAE ODI tri-series.
Under his leadership and in the absence of Litton Das, the Bangladesh cricket team will now face series ‘hosts’ Afghanistan in a must-win game. The match will be hosted by the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah on Wednesday, October 21.
