India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has been in the spotlight after India’s T20 World Cup 2026 win against New Zealand, as discussions around his tenure started gaining attention. Recently, a report claimed that he had asked to extend his role until the ODI World Cup 2027. However, a senior official from the BCCI has now denied this claim.

The official clarified that Agarkar has not made any such request so far, which brings a different perspective to the earlier reports.

Ajit Agarkar requested BCCI

Earlier, according to a report by TOI, Ajit Agarkar had approached the BCCI to extend his tenure until 2027. Moreover, the report mentioned that discussions were taking place, although no final decision had been reached. At the same time, it was shown that his contract had already been extended by one year before IPL 2025.

This extension came after India’s major victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

In addition, there were talks about a former Indian cricketer from the West Zone being a possible successor. However, no concrete development has taken place in that regard either. The timing of the reported request also attracted attention, as it came soon after India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2026.

BCCI chief selector’s contract details

According to PTI sources within the BCCI, Agarkar, who became chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in 2023 ahead of the Asia Cup, currently has a contract that runs until September 2026.

After that, a joint decision will be made by AAgarkar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia regarding his continuation until the ODI World Cup 2027.

“The selection panel is a sub-committee of the BCCI, and the selectors’ contract runs till September this year," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying. “Ajit’s contract ends in September, and after that the BCCI secretary and Ajit will have to decide whether he would continue till next year’s ODI World Cup," the source told PTI.

“A senior selector can continue for up to four years as per the constitution, and he doesn’t need to seek an extension," he added.

Ajit Agarkar’s achievements

Since taking charge in July 2023, Ajit Agarkar has played an important role in shaping the Indian team. He managed key transitions in both Test and T20 formats following the retirements of legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from these formats.

Furthermore, under his leadership, India reached the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 with an unbeaten record. The team also achieved remarkable success by winning the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, along with the Champions Trophy in 2025. In addition, India secured Asia Cup titles in 2023 and 2025, which reflects a consistent performance during his tenure.

Meanwhile, attention has already shifted toward future tournaments. Even though the ODI World Cup 2027 is still about a year away, around 20 probable players have been identified. The selectors are expected to closely monitor these players during IPL 2026, which begins on March 28.
