Rahane leaves out Kohli, Bumrah in all-time India XI [Source: AFP]
Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane built his all-time India Test XI (players that he has played with), and in a surprising turn of events, he left out Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, two stalwarts of the Indian red-ball team.
He shared a great on-field batting rapport with Kohli, and during his playing days, Jasprit Bumrah was one of the best Test bowlers for India. However, the two were missing from his all-time list.
Dhawan to open, strong middle-order options picked by Rahane
Rahane snubbed Kohli, but he still picked up strong middle-order players that he played alongside. For starters, he picked Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan as openers.
Rahane also played a lot of red-ball cricket with Rohit Sharma, but Rohit’s best in Tests came when Rahane was almost out of favour in the Test team.
Both the openers fared well for India in the chances they received. However, the former cricketer did manage to build a legendary middle order, comprising Rahul Dravid at 3, Sachin Tendulkar at 4, Rahane, and himself at 5.
MS Dhoni over Rishabh Pant as keeper
In Tests, maverick batter Rishabh Pant had better numbers than MS Dhoni, but Rahane was asked to pick a captain for his team, and he went with MS Dhoni, who can also keep wickets for his team.
Pant played alongside Rahane for a couple of years, and the left-handed batter was the key for him to beat Australia in the BGT 2020-21.
No Bumrah as Rahane picks Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Rahane picked R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as his two spin-bowling options, and no one can really argue with that decision. However, things get interesting in the pace-bowling department.
He selected Bhuvneshwar Kumar but left out Bumrah, arguably India’s greatest-ever pacer. Rahane played with Bumrah from 2018, and the pacer won countless matches for India in red-ball cricket.
Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma were the other two pacers selected by Rahane in his all-time India XI.
