Ajinkya Rahane picked the top five T20 batters, excluding Virat Kohli, but ended up choosing Abhishek Sharma as the only Indian on his list.

Even though retired from T20Is, Kohli is still considered one of the finest T20 batters, with an exceptional record in the T20 World Cups. Moreover, the legendary batter has the most runs in the IPL.

No place for Virat Kohli, Rahane names top 5 batters

As Ajinkya Rahane picked his top five batters in the shortest format, he named Jos Buttler in at number five, the Kiwi dasher Finn Allen at four, followed by Nicholas Pooran and Heinrich Klaasen. The current number two T20I batter, Abhishek Sharma, bagged the numero uno spot in Rahane’s list.

“Number 5 for me: Jos Buttler… greatest white-ball cricketer for the England team. Played with him in the Rajasthan Royals; he’s with Gujarat Titans. Very dangerous," Ajinkya Rahane stated in a Cricbuzz video.

“Number 4 for me: Finn Allen. Again, a quality top-order opening batter, very dangerous. Played with him, great guy, but a very dangerous batter. For me, number 3 is Nicholas Pooran. Left-hander, dangerous. Again, spinners, fast bowlers—can change the game any time. Number 2: Klaasen… probably 3, 4 seasons, 5 seasons—how well he has developed his game in the format, how dangerous he has become, or how many matches he has won in different situations. And then number one: Abhishek Sharma. Again, his form, his consistency, his intent. And I think the maturity which he has shown in the last one or two years is amazing," he added.

Why there's no place for Virat, Rohit, Dhoni in Rahane's list?

Not just Virat Kohli, but the veterans of the sport, such as Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, didn’t find a place in Ajinkya Rahane’s list.

In terms of runs, only Nicholas Pooran has more T20 runs than MS Dhoni (7628 runs), while the former West Indies batter is 1,011 runs less than Rohit’s tally of 12531 runs.

That said, Rahane’s selections appear to reflect modern-day standards and impact rather than longevity and sustained performance over time.
