Fatima Sana gets smashed by West Indies batters [Source: AFP]
In the second T20 of the IRE-W Tri-Series 2026, West Indies Women won the toss and chose to bat. Openers Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin came out firing, and Pakistan captain Fatima Sana bore the brunt of the assault.
Sana’s two overs cost 25 runs without a wicket as the West Indies raced to 66 for 3 in just eight overs. While Diana Baig was also hit, it was the treatment handed out to Sana that stood out.
Despite her good recent form, the Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana could not find any answers to the boundary-hitting spree by the Windies openers.
Fatima Sana’s Recent Bowling Form
Before this match, Fatima had been delivering consistent performances. During Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe earlier in May 2026, she picked up five wickets in three T20 innings at an impressive economy rate of 6.98, with a strike rate of 9.00.
Her best figures in that series were 3 for 7 in the first T20. In the two ODIs, she also claimed five wickets in two innings at a tight economy of 3.91.
The numbers painted the picture of a bowler in good rhythm, making the powerplay assault from West Indies all the more surprising and bewildering from the part of a veteran who has been leading the team from the front.

The Bashing by Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin
Fatima Sana entered the attack in the third over with West Indies already on 20 without loss after a 15-run over from Baig. What followed was a relentless boundary barrage.
Deandra Dottin set the tone immediately. Sana started over the wicket with a full delivery at the sixth stump, offering too much width.
Dottin flat-batted it through the right of the diving mid-off fielder for four. The next ball saw extra bounce, hitting Dottin’s back thigh pad and deflecting to point for a leg bye.
Then Hayley Matthews took over. A length delivery outside off stump was driven through the cover region for four. Sana tried to adjust, but a low full toss at the off stump was flicked through midwicket for another boundary. It was four boundaries in the last six balls for the West Indies.
The onslaught continued. A length delivery wide of off stump tempted Matthews to throw her bat. She got a thick edge that flew through the third man region for four. The over ended with a good-length ball at middle and leg, but Matthews chipped it aerially over square leg to the fence.
Sana’s first over went for 15 runs. By the end of her two-over spell, she had conceded 25 runs at an economy of 12.50. It was a bruising passage that ripped the momentum firmly West Indies’ way.
Fatima Sana’s Impact For Pakistan Ahead Of T20 World Cup 2026 Dented?
Despite this tough outing, Sana remains a match-winner for Pakistan. As a genuine pace-bowling all-rounder, she brings a rare dual threat.
With the new ball, she can swing it both ways to grab early wickets and disrupt top orders. At the death, her looping, slower-ball yorker is a proven weapon to close down scoring.
Importantly, Sana also holds the record for the fastest Women’s T20I half-century, off just 15 balls. That explosive batting form gives her the confidence to recover from a bad day with the ball and lead from the front in high-stakes World Cup matches.
The bashing against West Indies will sting, but Fatima Sana’s skill set and recent form suggest she can bounce back strongly when it matters most.
