We come to the end of our coverage of Day 1 of the 2026 Irani Cup. Join us right here on Crex at 8:30 AM IST tomorrow for our coverage of a potentially intriguing Day 2, and in the meantime, keep following us for a whole lot more!
Overall, Jammu and Kashmir will be pleased with the sequence of events today. They might feel that they could have mopped up the lower order quicker. Having said that, the Ranji Trophy champions' batting line-up will be keen for a challenge. The ROI fast bowlers will have their task cut out - the ball is still shiny, and they will be keen on getting into the hosts' middle order as soon as possible.
Session Breakdown (Day 1):
First Session : 31 Overs, 106 Runs, 2 Wickets
Second Session : 22.2 Overs, 49 Runs, 5 Wickets
Third Session : 21.5 Overs, 103 Runs, 5 Wickets
5:02 PM IST, Local Time: The umpire flicks the bails off, announcing the end of the day's play, and the players walk off. Day one in the 2026 Irani Cup belonged to the bowlers - 12 wickets fell over the course of the day's play as the green top at the Sher-i-Kashmir stadium aided the fast bowlers immensely. The Jammu and Kashmir bowlers made really good use of it, beating the bat and accounting for some of the most recognised figures of the current Indian cricket team, bundling ROI out for 237 in the process.
Having won the toss and sent ROI into bat first, the Jammu and Kashmir bowlers were in on the act straight away as Sunil Kumar and Lone Nasir Muzaffar got Sanat Sangwan and Sudip Kumar Gharami to nick off to keeper and slip respectively. Sarfaraz Khan and Shikhar Mohan then dug in and put up a good fight, keeping the bowlers at bay till lunch. The partnership between them for the third wicket reached 76 when Mohan, batting on 60, wafted at a wide-ish half volley and was caught behind off Muzaffar.
Rishabh Pant then walked in, saw off a few deliveries, then tried to play his natural, maverick-like way, but just wasn't able to time the ball right. He and Sarfaraz fell in quick succession - Sarfaraz was strangled down leg and brilliantly caught behind off Umar Nazar Mir, and Pant spooned a sharp catch to short cover two overs later. ROI were down to their lower-order going into tea, following which Smaran Ravichandran decided to counter-attack. Akash Deep gave him good company for a while, helping raise 39 for the eighth wicket. Post Akash Deep's departure, Ravichandran decided to hog the strike, protecting Mukesh Choudhary more often than not, and went on the attack.
Smaran Ravichandran's counter-attack helped him reach his half-century, and ensured a 43-run partnership for the ninth wicket, 38 of those runs being off Ravichandran's bat. Ravichandran fell trying to chase a wide delivery off Muzaffar - the last of the 68th over - and was well held by Samad at slip. The innings ended a drinks break and one ball later as Sunil Kumar went past Mukesh Choudhary's attempted hoick and re-arranged the stumps.
The Jammu and Kashmir top order then had around forty minutes in the day to see off. Qamran Iqbal and Shubham Pundir went in and looked to play them off. Pundir had to walk in because Shubham Khajuria, Jammu and Kashmir's regular opener, was off the field when the final wicket fell. Mukesh Kumar and Mukesh Choudhary got good bounce and movement with the new ball, keeping the openers on their toes, and five overs into the innings, Choudhary broke through for ROI, having Pundir caught behind after Pant sent the initial call of not out upstairs.
