Both teams will now travel to Leeds for the 2nd ODI. It will take place in a couple of days' time on the 24th of September at 5 PM IST (12:30 PM Local Time). Do join us on time for the live coverage.
England's white-ball summer continues to get better. They were up against some tricky low and slow conditions. However, the batters did well to set up a score just above par. The bowlers who have excellently maintained their fitness in the last few months came to the party and delivered to gift the side a win.
For Sri Lanka, this is the best fight from their side in this series so far. The bowlers will take great confidence from their effort. It is the batting that was poor in the T20Is and once again it is the batting that stays ordinary in the ODIs. They need to step up if the visitors are to make a comeback.
Harry Brook (England Captain): "(Pleased with the performance?) Yeah, it wasn't the easiest of surfaces. I said the other day that we want to be a team that can adapt to the conditions as quickly as we can and manufacture wins where conditions are not in our favour. I thought we did that really well today.
(Thoughts on 265 at the halfway stage?) Around the 20th over, we said that 280 would be a decent score. We managed to scrap away to get 260 (265). So, we knew what we had to do with the ball and pretty happy with the way our bowlers delivered out there.
(On Will Jacks) He is an outstanding player. He has been there now since many years. He has been a constant performer in franchise cricket. He has played a key role for us in that middle order and also has taken a heavy part with the ball as well. He has been an awesome player to have in the side.
(On managing to pick wickets in the middle phase) Yeah, he (Overton) has been another outstanding player for us in both T20Is and ODIs. I think the clarity we had was outstanding before stepping onto the field. The communication was very good as well. We knew that we had to keep the stumps in play as much as possible.
(On Rehan Ahmed) I think he went well. He did everything we asked him to do. He kept the stumps in play and gave the ball a bit of turn. Unfortunately got a bit of a tap at the end."
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka captain):"(Where did you lose that game?) I think the bowlers did really well in the first innings. Middle order struggled while batting. Pathum (Nissanka) batted really well and so did Dunith (Wellalage). I think we have to create something special in the middle order.
(Was 265 par on this pitch?) I think our bowlers did really well, that's why they scored 265. Good score for our batters to chase on this wicket.
(On their over rate) We have to do it better sometime while bowling second innings, we have to bowl on time. If the game gets tight, we have to ensure five fielders are outside the ring. We have to be more quick.
(Could they have been a little more attacking earlier on?) Yeah, little bit. Pathum batted really well. We need to hit more boundaries.
(On Sachindu Colombage) He bowled really well, very impressed with him. He controlled the game (with the ball) and when it came to batting, he batted positively. I'm very happy with him."
Will Jacks (POTM):"[What was more pleasing? Performance with bat or ball?] I think it was a really good all-round performance from the team. Personally, I was happy with how we finished the innings there. We had a tricky period for 10-15 overs, but we were trying to do things in the right way and get to a good score.
[On his batting approach] I think what we have been doing really well recently is communicating what we think the pitch is like and what we think a good score is. Joe and Harry were saying that 275-280 will be a really good score and when I got out there it felt quite tricky and personally I felt that were aiming for a bit lower and we all know in 50-over cricket you have more time than you think. We were able to catch up in the end.
[On his getting used to this role with the bat] I would like to think so now. I like playing the situation. I go into each game with an open mind. It is quite refreshing and keeps me relaxed.
[Was he aware that Sri Lanka were slow with their over rate and that he planned to cash in once the fielders were up?] I'd like to say so. But personally no. We were more worried about batting the 50 overs. We lost quite a few wickets and that just worked in my favour.
[On his role with the ball today] I think having batted on it and knowing what it was like, I knew I was going to play a decent role. Depending on what time you bowl, it does not really bother me now. Harry like to be as flexible as possible and that is why we are doing well as a team. No matter the time, you just have to do your best.
[On the classic dismissal to get his 5-fer] Yeah, they were taking the mickey out of me for lobbing that one up to Asitha Fernando. So, I thought I have to bowl a good one for the 5th one."
Player of the Match: Will Jacks
Time for the post-match presentation ceremony.
Stat: Graeme Hick, Paul Collingwood and Will Jacks are the only England bowlers to have taken an ODI five-wicket haul while bowling from the sixth position or lower.
