Team India will travel to Zimbabwe for a three-match T20I series, starting on July 21, 2026. All the matches will be played at the Harare Sports Club.
Following their victorious ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, the Indian men's cricket team is undergoing a holistic transition, including the major leadership challenge. Shreyas Iyer has replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain, marking a fresh chapter in India’s T20I campaign.
Shreyas Iyer will continue as Indian T20 captain despite an underwhelming start to his reign, while Tilak Varma will be his deputy.
Here’s how the India squad for the Zimbabwe T20 series 2026, announced on July 6, looks: Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Ravi Bishnoi, Prince Yadav, Yash Thakur, Ashok Sharma, Mayank Yadav, Prabhsimran Singh.
The Zimbabwe series has allowed selectors to rest senior players and test uncapped or emerging talent on foreign soil. At present, it is a massively essential stepping stone for building a deep, flexible pool of players to maintain a world-class team.
However, the injury scare continues for Team India, as some major talent will miss the tour.
That being said, in this article, we compile all the changes made to the India T20I squad ahead of the 3-match Zimbabwe tour.
All the changes Indian selectors made for the 2026 Zimbabwe Tour
1) Sanju Samson ‘rested’
Yes, you read it right! Sanju Samson, Player of the T20 World Cup 2026, has not been included in India’s squad for the three-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.
It was reported that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel did not consider Samson only because the Zimbabwe tour is a fringe series. And with Samson already part of the Indian squad for the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled in September in Japan, the selectors wanted to give exposure to young talents.
Samson’s omission has generated widespread debate, particularly considering his impactful performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup and Indian Premier League, where he was the third-highest run-scorer. Samson made two centuries and was the leading run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026.
However, after a Player of the Tournament run in the 2026 T20 World Cup, he struggled early in the Ireland and England Tour, scoring just 5, 0, and 1 in his recent T20I innings.
2) Prabhsimran Singh added as second wicket-keeper batter
Selectors have given Prabhsimran Singh a spot in India’s squad for the Zimbabwe Tour. Singh made a good impression through his T20 exploits, especially in the last two seasons of the IPL with Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Prabhsimran, who played three matches for India A in the tri-series in Sri Lanka in June, is the second wicketkeeper-batter in the India squad for the tour behind Ishan Kishan.
3) No Axar Patel
All-rounder Axar Patel has also been rested by the BCCI and purposely left out of India's 15-member T20I squad for the 2026 Zimbabwe tour to manage his playing workload, as he is currently busy playing in the ongoing series against England.
Patel experienced a significant dip in his all-round abilities during the recent IPL season and subsequent T20Is in Europe. However, he briefly bounced back against England, saving the first ODI for India after taking a 4-fer and smashing an unbeaten 57 runs off 52 balls.
4) Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy miss out due to injury
Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy have officially been ruled out of India's tour of Zimbabwe due to their respective injuries.
Harshit, who had recently returned after recovering from a knee injury at the start of the 2026 T20 World Cup, suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring injury.
The pace-bowling all-rounder missed the final two matches of the England T20 series and could not join the squad for the Zimbabwe tour. He is currently reporting to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation.
Moreover, Nitish Kumar Reddy was initially injured during training, sustaining a quadriceps issue. This ruled him out of the Ireland and England tours, forcing selectors to pull him from the Zimbabwe roster.
All-rounder Shivam Dube was named as his replacement for the England ODI series, and further squad shuffles occurred for the Zimbabwe T20Is.
5) Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur receive maiden call-up
As Rana and Reddy miss out, two pacers, Ashok Sharma and Yash Thakur, received their maiden senior call-up to the 15-member Indian squad for the Zimbabwe T20 2026 series.
Both the pacers earned the spot on the back of an impressive run in the domestic circuit and for India A teams.
Yash has made a name for himself for his accurate line, length and excellent yorkers. His inclusion can strengthen India’s death bowling contingent.
On the other hand, Ashok Sharma is also ready to wear the India blues. He impressed everyone with his speed and wicket-taking ability for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. He also made a strong case for his selection by taking the most wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
6) Rinku Singh returns
Left-handed batter Rinku Singh returns to India’s T20I setup after last featuring during India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign against South Africa earlier this year.

The uncapped fast bowlers have been selected following their impressive performances in the IPL. Both players will join a revamped, experimental squad that is resting several senior players from the recently concluded England series.
7) Arshdeep Singh rested to manage his workload
India’s frontline pacer, Arshdeep Singh, was a part of both ODIs and T20Is played in England. Thus, he has been left out for the Zimbabwe tour to manage his workload.
Notably, following the T20 World Cup, the left-arm pacer’s performance experienced a noticeable dip. While he started with early success against Ireland, taking a combined 4 wickets for 63 runs in t20 T20s, his subsequent bilateral T20I and ODI outings against England have yielded elevated economy rates and fewer wickets.
8) Mayank Yadav added after a hiatus
Express pacer Mayank Yadav also returns to the squad after a 21-month hiatus, having last played for India late in 2024. However, his selection sparked major debate among fans and experts because he has been picked despite going wicketless during the IPL 2026 season.
India hopeful for a fresh start in Harare
The Men in Blue will be looking to leave behind the horrific memories of the recently concluded UK Tour, which ended without a single win in the 6 matches played against Ireland and England, barring the one abandoned match.
The Zimbabwe series will begin on July 23 in Harare. For the uninitiated, VVS Laxman will be head coach for the Zimbabwe tour as well as the Asian Games, with the regular India coaching staff focusing on the Sri Lanka Test tour in August and the white-ball series against West Indies in September-October.
