India and Maharashtra batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named captain of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy on Monday. The 29-year-old batter, who leads Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and was deputy to Tilak Varma in last month’s India A tri-series in Sri Lanka, will captain the inter-zonal group.

The 15-member squad was announced on Monday by the selection committee chaired by Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar, who was appointed in the role earlier this season.

The tournament will retain its zonal format for the 2026 season. The West Zone will take on North Zone in the quarterfinal 2 of the tournament from August 23-26. The Duleep Trophy will comprise a total of five matches including the final, which will be played from September 6-10 at the COE Ground 1.

The West Zone squad features Prithvi Shaw, who moved to Maharashtra from Mumbai last year, along with India batter Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan.

Saurashtra's Harvik Desai, who is the only player from the state in the squad, and Gujarat's Urvil Patel, are the two wicketkeepers. The squad also features Mumbai skipper and India all-rounder Shardul Thakur, who captained the West Zone last season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Overall Captaincy Records

In his career, Ruturaj has led his teams in 92 matches across different formats, different teams, and in different tournaments. In those 92 fixtures, his team has won 50 matches and lost 38 matches. Thus, his overall win percentage comes to a decent 43.1%.

Once again, the batter has been appointed the leader of West Zone for Duleep Trophy 2026 due to his calm demeanour, tactical clarity, and proven success in domestic and multi-nation leadership roles.

That being said, in this article we take a look at his captaincy records in details.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Captaincy Record in Domestic and International cricket

Gaikwad clinched a trophy in his very first international assignment as the Indian captain. He led the men's team to the gold medal in the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2022.

Defeating Nepal, Bangladesh, and finally Afghanistan in the knockouts, India sealed its first championship win in international T20Is since MS Dhoni had pioneered the team to victory in Asia Cup 2016.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed as the white-ball captain of the Maharashtra side in 2020. He could not win any tournament with them, but the team did well to make it to the Final of the 2022/2023 season.

He performed well for the side in the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Gaikwad has captained his domestic side in 19 games and won 10 of those matches in SMAT.
