Former RCB skipper and the modern-day batting great, Virat Kohli, is the most successful batter in the history of IPL. He is the leading run-scorer of all time in the tournament’s history since its inception in 2007.

Kohli has scored 8,661 runs in 259 innings at an average of 39.54, hitting eight centuries and 63 half-centuries. He is leading the IPL run-scoring chart with sheer dominance.

Nonetheless, there are some active batters in IPL who have a knack for surpassing Kohli to become the leading run-scorer in the tournament’s history. That said, here’s a look at the five players who can surpass Virat Kohli’s tally of most IPL runs.

5 Players Who Can Surpass Virat Kohli’s Tally Of Most IPL Runs

Yashasvi Jaiswal (2020-Present) - RR

The young opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, is one of the most consistent performers for the Rajasthan Royals since his IPL debut in 2020. In his six-year IPL career of 67 games, he has scored 2,166 runs in 66 innings at an average of 34.38 and a strike rate of 152.85, hitting two centuries and 15 half-centuries.

Jaiswal is just 24 and seems to have almost 13-14 years left in his IPL career, which might make him the batter to surpass Virat Kohli and become the batter with the most runs in IPL history. His consistency could be one of the keys to helping him achieve this milestone.

Abhishek Sharma (2018-Present) - DC/SRH

The swashbuckling SRH opener, Abhishek Sharma, has been given consistent chances to feature throughout the entire season since IPL 2022. He has been one of the 'top performers with the bat' for his side since then. Abhishek has scored 1,816 runs in 74 innings at an average of 27.10, including a century and nine half-centuries.

Abhishek also has more than a decade of IPL left to play, during which he can easily achieve many milestones in the tournament's history. Besides that, he could also become the batter to surpass Virat Kohli and achieve the record of the most runs by a batter in the tournament's history.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi (2025-Present) - RR

RR's teenage batting prodigy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, has amazed everyone with his sensational run of form in the white-ball cricket, be it T20Is or the ODIs. He also made a remarkable start to his IPL career last year, becoming the youngest ever to play in the tournament's history.

Vaibhav smashed 252 runs in seven innings he batted in IPL 2025, at a brilliant average of 36.00 and an unbelievable strike rate of 206.55, including a century and a half-century. Given his age of just 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi can be expected to play in the IPL for the next two decades.

Shubman Gill (2018-Present) - KKR/GT

India’s current Test and ODI skipper, Shubman Gill, has also left an impressive mark with the bat in the IPL. He started his career with KKR in IPL 2018 and moved to the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022.

Notably, Gill was also part of the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans, which lifted the title in their first-ever IPL appearance. Speaking of Gill's overall IPL career, he has scored 3,866 runs in 115 innings of his 118-match IPL career.

He has scored these runs at an average of 39.44, scoring four centuries and 26 half-centuries. He has a lot of years of IPL left in him, which makes him one of the top contenders to surpass Virat Kohli and become the leading run-scorer of all-time in the IPL history.

Shreyas Iyer (2015-Present) - DC/KKR/PBKS

After leading KKR to the title win in IPL 2024, the star batter Shreyas Iyer also guided the Punjab Kings to the tournament’s final in IPL 2025. Apart from his brilliant captaincy, Iyer also shone with the bat in the tournament’s previous edition.

He scored 604 runs in 17 innings at an amazing average of 50.33, hitting six half-centuries. Speaking of his overall IPL career for three franchises across 10 years and 11 IPL editions, Iyer has scored 3,731 runs in 132 innings at an average of 34.22, including 27 half-centuries.

As Iyer just turned 31 in December 2025, he can be part of at least the next 6-7 IPL seasons. So, he also has a chance to become the leading run-scorer of all time in the tournament’s history, surpassing the RCB legend, Virat Kohli.
