Former Caribbean batting great and one of the IPL legends, Chris Gayle, left a historic legacy with his sensational batting performances in the IPL. He played across 13 IPL seasons over 12 years from 2009 to 2021, featuring in 142 games.
In these appearances, he scored 4,965 runs in 141 innings at an average of 39.72, with six centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also smashed 404 fours and 357 sixes. Even after five years of his IPL retirement, Chris Gayle still ranks first in the list of batters with the most sixes in IPL history.
There are a few batters among the currently active players who are quite close to Gayle’s record and might surpass him sooner or later. Therefore, here’s a look at the five players who can break Chris Gayle’s record of most sixes in IPL history.
5 Players who can surpass Chris Gayle’s tally of most IPL 6s
Rohit Sharma - 302 sixes
The five-time IPL-winning skipper, Rohit Sharma, is one of the most successful batters in the entire history of the tournament. He has accumulated 7,046 runs in 267 innings, averaging 29.73, including two centuries and 47 half-centuries.
Besides that, Rohit is one of the prominent six-hitters in the tournaments; he is ranked second among batters with the most sixes in IPL history. Rohit has smashed 302 sixes in his IPL career, being just 56 sixes away from breaking Chris Gayle’s record of most IPL sixes.
Rohit could surpass Chris Gayle in the coming season or two, as the former will also be in action for MI in the upcoming IPL 2026.
Rishabh Pant - 170 sixes
The LSG skipper and star wicketkeeper-batter, Rishabh Pant, is also known as one of the batters who has a knack for hitting the ball for the sixes. In his almost 10-year-long IPL career across nine editions, Pant has played 125 games.
In these appearances, he has smashed 170 sixes, which translates to 1,020 runs, one-third of his IPL career's 3,553 runs. It also reflects Rishabh Pant's six-hitting prowess and his knack for surpassing Chris Gayle to achieve the milestone of being the batter with the most sixes in IPL history.
Nicholas Pooran - 167 sixes
The explosive LSG batter, Nicholas Pooran, made his IPL debut in 2019 and has established himself as one of the power-hitters in the tournament over the years. In his 90-game IPL career, Pooran has scored 2,293 runs in 87 innings at an average of 34.22 and a strike rate of 168.97, including 14 half-centuries.
Out of his 2,293 runs, Pooran has scored 1,002 runs, almost fifty per cent, only with the 167 sixes he has smashed in his IPL career. So, he can also be believed to surpass his former Caribbean senior Chris Gayle in terms of most sixes by a batter in the history of IPL.
Abhishek Sharma - 101 sixes
The sensational SRH opener, Abhishek Sharma, has established himself as one of the most prolific six-hitters in his shorter but impressive 77-game IPL career. In these 74 innings, Abhishek has scored 1,816 runs at an average of 27.10 and an outstanding batting strike rate of 163.01.
In these appearances, the young southpaw has smashed 101 sixes, averaging more than one six per game. Abhishek Sharma is known for hitting the ball in the stands for a six from the first ball of the game. So, he has both time and skill to surpass the legendary record of former legend Chris Gayle and become the batter with the most sixes in the tournament's history.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi - 24 sixes
The teenage batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, became the youngest player to take the field in the IPL, making his debut for RR in IPL 2025. In just seven games he played in the last edition, he smashed 252 runs, averaging 36.00 with an astonishing batting strike rate of 206.55, including a century and a half-century.
Apart from his ability to score big knocks, Suryavanshi also left everyone awestruck with his six-hitting ability at the age of just 14. He smashed a total of 24 sixes in just seven innings he batted. It translated into the average of more than three sixes per innings.
Therefore, having almost two decades of IPL left for him, considering his current age of just 14, Vaibhav can also be considered one of the top contenders to break Chris Gayle's record of the highest number of sixes in IPL history.
