Why Is Shashank Singh Dropping So Many Catches In IPL 2026? Decoding The Reasons

Punjab Kings’ batter Shashank Singh has carved a niche for himself as a power-hitting middle-order batter known for his ability to hit sixes. In the IPL, the right-hander announced himself with a blistering 61 not out off 29 balls from number six, showcasing his finishing ability.

In 2024 season, he smashed 21 sixes and established himself as a dependable name in high-pressure situations.

Once again, in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League, Shashank is in the limelight, but this time for an unwanted reason.

The problem of declining catching efficiency in IPL

The world knows that the fielding standards in cricket have undergone a massive transformation in recent years, becoming more athletic, specialised, and integral to match outcomes, particularly with the rise of T20 leagues like the IPL.

However, elite-level fielding sometimes oscillates between brilliant, acrobatic plays and unexpected drops.

It is worth noting that the IPL 2026 season in particular has seen a relative decline in overall catching efficiency.

Shashank Singh’s catching efficiency under severe scrutiny

Amid the chaos, PBKS’ batter Shashank Singh has earned himself the title of Mr Butterfingers, according to the fans, highlighting his ineffectiveness in the field.

In the match number 49, played between PBKS and SRH, Punjab Kings’ catching problems have once again become the topic of concern for captain Shreyas Iyer.

And in the forefront over again is Shashank Singh. His latest dropped chance adds yet another damaging entry to his already poor field record this IPL.

The freshest blunder came against Heinrich Klaasen in the 8.4 over of SRH’s innings. Yuzvendra Chahal tossed one full on the leg-stump line, Klaasen mistimed the sweep, and the ball went straight to Shashank at deep backward square. He settled under it, got both hands to the ball, but spilled a regulation chance. The mistake also cost PBKS four runs.

It is worth noting that even before the SRH match, Shashank was already the weakest catcher in the IPL 2026 among players with a serious sample. He had taken three catches and dropped four from seven chances. That left him with a catching efficiency of 42.86%.

Now, the question comes, why is the Punjab batter so poor in the field?

3 Reasons why Shashank Singh has become the face of dropped catches in IPL 2026

1. Poor catching technique

Body balance is fundamental to effective catching, as it allows a fielder to remain stable, react quickly, and secure the ball under pressure. A balanced body keeps the centre of gravity controlled, ensuring that a fielder can move in any direction and absorb the impact of the ball without falling over or fumbling the catch.

However, it massively lacks in Shashank’s approach while taking the catch. He appears to be in a hurry and off balance with his hands awkwardly approaching the catch.

In the history of cricket, many players have come under scrutiny for dropping catches, but time and again, they have been advised to focus on the basics rather than complicating it too much.

That said, Shashank is generally a capable fielder, and his poor fielding could be a rare, temporary slump or "curse" rather than a lack of skill.

2. Mental pressure and fatigue

For two long months in IPL, players face a punishing schedule, leaving little room for rest between the high-stakes games. It could be understood that the relentless pace of the IPL, combined with high-stakes fielding in crucial, high-intensity moments, has made catching difficult.

In the 2026 season, extreme heat and exhaustion have turned routine catches into "symptoms" of a sport that never stops. While execution is faulty, the underlying cause is a "catch-drop virus" that could also be fueled by dehydration and a calendar that values quantity over quality.

3. The extreme pressure of the stage

Undoubtedly, there is immense pressure lingering on players in the IPL. Notably, in 2022, one of the finest cricketers to ever grace the sport, Kapil Dev, emphasised that, as the sport has become more fast-paced since the arrival of T20 cricket, the dynamics of the game have changed.

T20 leagues like the Indian Premier League demand a lot from players, sometimes leading to intense pressure.

That said, playing at a level like the IPL, there's no room for error. As emphasised by PBKS head coach, Ricky Ponting, on talking about Shashank’s dropped catch, “I won’t make any excuses,” he said. “We trained here. That is why you train, to have a feel of the venue.”
