Few players have improved as much as Tim Seifert in T20s. He always had high skills, but his recent form has made him invaluable in this format.
In the last couple of years, Seifert has not only solidified his spot in New Zealand’s T20I side but also done exceedingly well across T20 leagues. That’s also why he earned a gig with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2026.

Since 2025, Tim Seifert has scored 2,917 runs at an average of 33.52 and a strike rate of 152.08 in 96 T20 innings. His tally includes 17 fifties and three centuries, with only Sahibzada Farhan scoring more runs than him during this period.
The extent of Seifert’s improvement becomes clearer when compared with his numbers a couple of years earlier. Between 2021 and 2024, he averaged just 28.83 while striking at 130.14 in 128 T20 innings. He managed only 17 fifties and two centuries during that period, despite the considerably larger sample size.

Seifert would often get stuck during his innings, with his scoring options appearing limited. Teams also experimented with him at various positions, from the top of the order all the way down to No. 7, but consistency remained elusive.
He was dropped from the New Zealand side at times, while opportunities in franchise cricket, particularly in the major T20 leagues, also became harder to come by.
Since last year, however, Seifert has represented nine different teams and delivered reasonably well for almost all of them. His best performances have come for New Zealand, for whom he has scored 988 runs at an average of 44.90 and a strike rate of 164.94 in 26 innings, including eight fifties.
He also enjoyed a fruitful stint with the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026, scoring 379 runs at an average of 37.90 and a strike rate of 158.57 in 10 outings. He has now carried that form into The Hundred 2026 with Manchester Super Giants.
Seifert has scored 322 runs at an average of 46 and a strike rate of 164.28 in nine innings. Additionally, he has four fifties and has played an instrumental role in taking his team to the final in 2026.

The biggest reason behind Tim Seifert’s remarkable consistency has been his improvement against spin. Since 2025, he has averaged 30.62 and struck at 150 against spinners in T20 cricket, hitting a boundary every 5.14 deliveries.
Among batters to have faced at least 500 balls against spin since 2025, Seifert ranks fifth in strike rate. Those numbers become even more impressive considering how often he has played across different countries and conditions. Despite the variations in surfaces and environments, Seifert has consistently found ways to score against spin.
Few players have experienced as wide a range of conditions as Seifert over the last couple of years. He has also faced almost every quality spinner in world cricket during this period, making the scale of his improvement even more significant.
Between 2021 and 2024, Seifert averaged a healthy 35.65 against spin, but his strike rate was only 118.51. He took approximately 7.74 deliveries per boundary and played a dot ball on 36.9% of deliveries. The contrast with his current numbers highlights how much more proactive he has become against spin.
He now has more scoring options at his disposal, and this revamped approach against spin has been one of the key reasons behind his ability to produce bigger scores. Seifert is no longer simply a powerplay specialist. With spinners unable to tie him down in the middle overs, he is increasingly able to bat deep into the innings and convert starts into substantial scores.
Should KKR retain Seifert for IPL 2027?
Tim Seifert’s tremendous improvement as a T20 batter earned him an IPL return in 2026. He got only three matches for KKR, scoring 19 runs, but that is far too small a sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions.
KKR still have several reasons to consider retaining him ahead of IPL 2027. For starters, they will need a dynamic opener to potentially replace Ajinkya Rahane at the top. They have Sarthak Ranjan, who has been making waves in local T20 leagues, but Seifert offers a more proven and reliable option.
Seifert also already knows how to bat alongside Finn Allen, having forged several big partnerships with him in T20Is. The two complement each other well and could provide KKR with brisk starts in the powerplay, particularly on flat surfaces.
His versatility also gives KKR another reason to keep him around. Having significantly improved his game against spin, Seifert can now operate effectively in the middle order as well.
That could allow KKR to promote someone like Angkrish Raghuvanshi to the top while using Seifert alongside Cameron Green and Rinku Singh in the middle order. His proficiency against spin could, in turn, give KKR greater flexibility to deploy Rinku more aggressively against pace.
There is also the possibility of using Seifert as a trade asset to address another weakness in the squad. KKR could potentially look for a solid pace-bowling all-rounder to complement Cameron Green. Green’s availability could be a concern given Australia’s packed schedule, while his bowling workload will likely need careful management even when he is available.
Adding a couple of reliable Indian pacers would also make sense, particularly given the injury concerns surrounding some of KKR’s existing options. In that context, letting Seifert go or trading him away would hardly be a surprise ahead of the next season.
However, his recent form and vastly improved game against spin could force KKR to rethink that decision. With the mini-auction unlikely to offer an abundance of proven options, Seifert’s versatility and recent consistency could make him more valuable to KKR than his modest IPL numbers suggest.
