India Women's team has suffered a nasty exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. Failing to qualify for the knockouts was a massive blow for a team that had just won the ODI World Cup. 

Harmanpreet Kaur has been a terrific leader for the side since 2016 in the T20I format, but the all-format load might have increased the expectations and pressure on her shoulders as well.

In this year only, Harmanpreet Kaur has led the India Women team to 6 wins out of the 15 matches she captained. A horrific downfall as per the reputation of the team.

This generally gave rise to the demand of veterans and experts demanding a split captaincy for the Women’s team like the Men’s team. Smriti Mandhana’s name came to the forefront, and there are very suitable reasons to bring her up too!

Harmanpreet Kaur has been leading the India side officially since 2016 and was named the stand-in skipper a few times in 2012. Since then, Harmanpreet has managed 84 wins for Team India while leading in 147 matches and losing 57 of them. 

Smriti Mandhana, on the other hand, has never been officially appointed as the India women's captain. However, she has also served as the stand-in skipper in the absence of Harmanpreet in 18 matches and managed to win 11 of those 18 games, losing only six, while one match was abandoned. 

This significantly raises Mandhana's stakes as a better captain, though she has much less T20I captaincy experience than Harmanpreet. On a scale, Mandhana as India T20I captain has been  24% more effective than Kaur.

To be surprisingly accurate, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have played the same number of matches in the Women's Premier League. 

Both Harmanpreet and Smriti have led their teams, Mumbai Indians Women and Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women respectively, in 35 matches, with Harmanpreet now holding a slight edge in terms of leadership record in the tournament.

Harmanpreet has led her team to two WPL titles and has won 22 of the 35 matches she has captained, while losing 13, giving her a win-loss ratio of 1.692. 

Meanwhile, Smriti has also led her team to two WPL titles and has captained 35 matches, winning 18 and losing 16. Her win-loss ratio stands at 1.125, which clearly shows how effective Harmanpreet has been as a leader in the WPL.

Conclusion: Who will be better as the Indian T20I captain?

There is no doubt that both cricketers are exceptional in their cricketing abilities and possess strong leadership qualities. However, the difference in their captaincy records highlights a noticeable gap in effectiveness. 

Despite Harmanpreet Kaur having a significant influence on Indian cricket after serving as captain for over a decade, Smriti Mandhana, who is relatively newer to captaincy, has still managed to lead the national side to 11 wins in 18 matches, underlining her potential as India's future T20 captain.

While discussions about a possible captaincy change are gradually gaining momentum, it is unlikely that Harmanpreet will be removed as India's T20 skipper anytime soon. However, based on the comparison and the available data, Smriti has emerged as a compelling candidate to lead India's T20 team in the future, if given the opportunity.
