Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led India in the shortest format, is expected to step down after a mixed run of results. Although India lifted the T20 World Cup title under his leadership at home, his personal form showed inconsistency across major tournaments and the Indian Premier League.

In the 2026 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar scored 242 runs across nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72. Furthermore, in the IPL 2026 season, he managed 270 runs in 13 innings with an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

As a result, selectors started exploring new leadership options for the future. Among the top contenders, Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer have emerged as strong candidates for India’s next T20I captaincy role.

Sanju Samson As Captain

Sanju Samson has built a strong reputation as a calm and attacking leader in domestic cricket and the IPL. Notably, he has previously led the Rajasthan Royals and also guided Kerala in domestic competitions. 

In the international stage, Samson played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. He delivered impactful performances under pressure and earned recognition for his match-winning innings. 

In an important encounter against West Indies, he scored an unbeaten 97 runs, which helped India secure victory in a high-pressure situation. Moreover, he followed this with strong knocks of 89 runs against England and New Zealand during the knockout phase.

Sanju Samson’s Captaincy Records

As a captain in the IPL, Sanju Samson has led in 67 matches, winning 33 games, losing 32, along with one tie and one no result. This gives him a win percentage of 49.25, showing a nearly balanced record. 

Additionally, he played a major role in transforming Rajasthan Royals into a competitive side and led them to the IPL final in 2022, their first since the inaugural season.

Notably, his journey also reflects early leadership experience at junior levels, where he captained Kerala age-group teams such as Under-13, Under-16 and Under-19. 

This long-term exposure shaped his decision-making skills. Recently, his strong IPL form, including multiple centuries and over 400 runs in a season, has further strengthened his claim as a future leader for India in T20 cricket.

Shreyas Iyer As Captain

Shreyas Iyer is considered one of the most consistent and tactical leaders in modern Indian cricket. Notably, his name is strongly linked with future T20I captaincy plans, especially as selectors prepare for long-term goals such as the 2028 Olympics and upcoming ICC tournaments.

In recent IPL seasons, Iyer has shown excellent batting form and leadership maturity. In IPL 2026, he scored 498 runs and played a major role in guiding his team close to playoff qualification. In IPL 2025, he led Punjab Kings to the final, showcasing his ability to manage pressure situations and build competitive squads. 

However, his international T20 career has been on pause since December 2023, when he last played against Australia. However, his domestic and IPL performances have kept him in strong contention for a national comeback.

Shreyas Iyer’s Captaincy Record

Iyer’s captaincy journey began with Delhi Capitals, where he took over leadership during a challenging phase. In his debut match as captain, he scored an unbeaten 93 against KKR, leading his team to victory. In the same partial season, he won four out of eight matches, achieving a 50% win rate

In 2019, his first full season as captain, Delhi Capitals reached new heights. He led the team to 10 wins in 16 matches, resulting in a 62.5 percent win rate and their first playoff qualification since 2012.

Later, while captaining KKR, his performance varied in the first season with 6 wins in 14 matches. However, the real breakthrough came in 2024 when he guided KKR to their third IPL title and first since 2014. The team secured 11 wins in 16 matches with a 68.80% win rate, finishing at the top of the table.
