Pakistan’s World Cup Dream Seeks Arafat Minhas And The Numbers Back It Up

Arafat Minhas might be 21 years old, but what he did in his senior debut for Pakistan in Rawalpindi last week might well be remembered for some time.

Firstly, he took the ball in hand and picked up five wickets, which included the dismissals of Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green, and later, made useful contributions with the bat, with an unbeaten 17-ball 18 to take them past the finishing line.

Fittingly, he was adjudged the Player of the Match there and later won the Player of the Series award for his consistent all-round performance.

The Pakistan vs Australia ODIs saw what Minhas can deliver at such a young age. A slow left-arm orthodox bowler, coupled with a handy customer with the bat in hand in the lower middle order if required, Minhas is exactly the profile Pakistan were desperately looking for.

Arafat Minhas Is Here To Stay!

Arafat Minhas' journey to senior cricket was exceptional. He was first named the Player of the Tournament during the 2021/22 National Under-19 Championship in Pakistan, and later took the vice-captaincy duties for Pakistan during the 2023 ACC Men's Under-19 Asia Cup.

Even though Pakistan are known for being a well-equipped side every time they take the field in ICC’s grand competitions, they somehow manage to disappoint their ardent fans. Their last ODI World Cup came way back in 1992, under the leadership of easily the greatest ever cricketer from their land, Imran Khan.

Pakistan team lacks someone to be influential with the ball in hand, as well as someone who can be reliable with the bat if required. The likes of Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan did their bit, but neither of them won trust by proving themselves in a consistent manner.

The early signs for Arafat show promise, and the Australia tour is not the first assignment in which he has become the main man of the side. He was the best all-rounder in the Pakistan Junior League 2022 and won the Player of the Tournament award at the PCB National Under-16 One-Day Tournament 2020–21 as well.

Adding to that, Arafat Minhas was impressive for Pakistan at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2024 as well, showing the world that he is here to stay and can go big if he does not get distracted by unnecessary things.

Conclusion

Of course, there is still time to draw conclusions about how well Minhas can reach in his journey of becoming the greatest Pakistan all-rounder. It might even break into pieces, as often it happens in Pakistan due to a lack of motivation, among other things.

As things stand, Minhas is on the right track and may well truly influence Pakistan with his leadership qualities from the beginning. His significance was visible in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as well, and it will be seen how far he can go from here on.

If he stays motivated, don’t be surprised if he wins Player of the Tournament in the ODI World Cup 2027. Simultaneously, it would help Pakistan achieve the glory they have been chasing for 34 years.
