Hardik Pandya remains India's first-choice fast-bowling all-rounder in ODI cricket. When fit, he balances the side like no other Indian player can. His ability to bat in the middle order and bowl effectively makes him one of the first names on the team sheet.

The bigger question is not whether Hardik should play. It is who can step in if he is unavailable. With Harshit Rana emerging as a bowling all-rounder who can operate in the lower order, India's biggest requirement is a middle-order all-rounder who can perform Hardik's role with the bat while contributing a few overs. 

Two names effectively stand out here. Shivam Dube and Nitish Reddy. Following Nitish's injury, the BCCI picked Dube for the England ODI series. That decision may also provide an early indication of India's thinking ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Why Do India Need A Back-Up For Hardik Pandya?

Hardik's importance to India's ODI setup has never been in doubt. He provides batting depth, finishes innings, bowls with the new ball and through the middle overs, and adds balance to the playing XI.

His recent injury concerns, however, have highlighted one reality. India cannot enter the 2027 World Cup depending on only one fast-bowling all-rounder.

Nitish Reddy looked like the long-term successor. His latest quadriceps injury has delayed those plans. That has opened the door for Shivam Dube to make his case.

Dube vs Nitish Reddy: ODI And List-A Numbers Comparison

At first glance, both players have similar List-A batting records. Their List-A averages are almost identical. Shivam Dube scores at a much faster strike rate, while Nitish has shown greater composure in building innings.

In international cricket, Nitish Reddy has enjoyed a brighter ODI start, averaging 33.33 in six matches compared to Dube's 10.75 from four games. 

Different Skill Sets, Different Strengths

Why Shivam Dube Fits India's Current ODI Combination?

Dube brings qualities that India's batting order currently lacks. He is a left-handed middle-order batter, which naturally breaks the sequence of right-handers in India's settled top five. That creates match-up problems for opposition bowlers.

His biggest strength is power-hitting against spin. India successfully used Axar Patel in an advanced batting role during the Champions Trophy for exactly this reason. 

Shivam Dube offers a similar option. He can be promoted if spinners dominate the middle overs and clear the boundary from the first ball.

He has also been in consistent batting form over the last two seasons across formats. With the ball, Dube is not a genuine 140 kph pacer like Hardik. He relies on hard lengths and steep bounce. On South African pitches, where the 2027 World Cup will be played, that style can still prove effective.

India already have specialist fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar in their ODI attack. So, they do not necessarily need Dube to bowl his full quota every game. Five to seven useful overs may be enough.

What Nitish Reddy Offers?

Nitish Reddy resembles Hardik more closely as a cricketer.

He bowls quicker than Shivam Dube and has the ability to generate seam movement and swing with the new ball. His bowling style is closer to that of a traditional pace bowler.

With the bat, he is an outstanding player of pace and short bowling. His stroke-making against fast bowlers has already impressed at the international level.

One area that still needs improvement is his game against quality spin. Teams have found ways to slow him down during the middle overs, and developing that aspect could make him a complete ODI all-rounder.

Given his age and skill set, Nitish remains a major part of India's long-term plans.

Fitness Could Decide Everything

Talent alone may not settle this race. Availability often becomes the biggest selection factor before a World Cup.

Nitish has already suffered his first major international injury. He picked up a left quadriceps injury during the ODI series against Afghanistan in June 2026, aggravated it after returning in the third ODI, and was eventually ruled out of the Ireland and England tours. He is currently working through rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Dube has also dealt with injuries during his career, including a side strain and occasional back issues. Even so, he has managed to remain available for more cricket across the last two years and has returned strongly after every setback.

With Hardik also recovering from injury, India will naturally value a player who can stay fit through long ODI tournaments.

Why Dube May Have The Edge Over Nitish Reddy?

India's current ODI combination already features an established top five consisting of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

The role at No. 6 is not about rebuilding innings every match. It is about finishing strongly, attacking spin, providing left-hand variety and contributing useful medium pace.

Those requirements suit Shivam Dube almost perfectly. Harshit Rana is also emerging as another pace-bowling option lower down the order. That reduces the need to find another bowler who mirrors Hardik exactly.

Instead, India may benefit more from adding batting flexibility through Dube.

Conclusion: England ODIs Could Shape India's 2027 World Cup Planning

The upcoming ODI series against England may become the biggest audition of Dube's ODI career.

A strong performance would strengthen his case as Hardik Pandya's primary back-up for the 2027 World Cup. It would also give India a reliable alternative if Hardik's workload needs to be managed over the next year.

Nitish Kumar Reddy remains one of India's brightest young all-rounders and still has enough time to reclaim that position after returning to full fitness.

At present, though, India's balance, experience, left-handed batting option and current team combination make Shivam Dube the stronger choice as Hardik Pandya's understudy heading towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
