The Punjab Kings IPL 2026 squad consists of three overseas bowling options, with one of the mainstays, Lockie Ferguson, now in danger of missing out on the initial phase of the tournament.

Earlier on Thursday, March 19, Ferguson announced that he wants to take some time off from cricket since he became a new father with his wife. Hence, declaring parental leave, Ferguson is set to miss the initial weeks of the mega Indian tournament.

Although this occasion calls for celebration, it has left Punjab Kings with a deep woe, given the fact that the New Zealand pacer was one of their primary overseas pace bowling options.

Nevertheless, with Lockie Ferguson out of the squad, several other overseas players will have their chance to make it to the Playing XI. Let’s take a look at the potential for all of them.

Punjab Kings Overseas Options For IPL 2026 If Lockie Ferguson Is Unavailable

1) Xavier Bartlett

With Lockie Ferguson's withdrawal, the first and foremost name that appears on the playing XI sheet is that of Xavier Bartlett. The Australian pacer played the IPL 2025 season for Punjab Kings, where he featured in four matches, picking up two wickets at an expensive economy rate of 9.60.

Xavier Bartlett has recently played in the Sheffield Shield, where he took 13 wickets from six innings, underlining his strong and red-hot form with the ball. He also featured in the T20 World Cup 2026, though he was not very successful, managing only two wickets from three outings.

Nevertheless, Bartlett's powerplay economy rate in T20 cricket stands at 7.96, while he has successfully scalped 14 wickets from 37.5 overs. Hence, although not a complete replacement, the team might rely on Bartlett in the absence of Lockie Ferguson.

2) Marco Jansen

Marco Jansen, the red-hot Proteas all-rounder, is all set to take charge in the playing XI for Punjab Kings. The 25-year-old has earlier played for PBKS in the last season, where he successfully took 16 wickets and also scored 75 runs at a strike rate of 119.04 for the team.

Overall, in the IPL, he boasts a bowling average of 31.91 while maintaining an economy rate of 9.40.

Jansen's current form also reflects his dominance, as in the T20 World Cup 2026, he managed to take 11 wickets from six appearances, while also scoring 73 runs in the tournament from his limited three-match outings.

In the SA20 2025–26 league, Marco Jansen picked up 13 wickets from 11 appearances, further underlining his rise as a star all-rounder. 

He can be a valuable addition at No. 5 or No. 6 to bolster Punjab's batting lineup, while also strengthening the pace attack in the absence of Lockie Ferguson.

3) Azmatullah Omarzai

The 25-year-old Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai is next on the list to feature in Punjab Kings' playing XI. He featured for the team in the previous edition, scoring 57 runs from nine appearances while also contributing with the ball, taking 12 wickets from 16 matches.

The fast-bowling all-rounder can strike early in the powerplay and clear the ropes in the death overs, making him very valuable in the absence of Lockie Ferguson.

Omarzai, who will serve as a crucial middle-order cushion for the team, has also been an asset for Afghanistan in the World Cup 2026, where he managed to take nine wickets, including impressive four-wicket and three-wicket hauls against the UAE and South Africa, respectively. 

His red-hot form further underlines his ability to perform in IPL 2026, where he will be one of the key components of the pace battery for PBKS.

4) Marcus Stoinis

Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis will be in the playing XI for Punjab Kings. The 6ft, 36-year-old had a rough T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, where he managed 55 runs and four wickets from three appearances.

However, his IPL stats will give Punjab Kings confidence. Across his decade-long stint in the IPL, he has amassed 2,026 runs from 109 matches while also scalping 44 wickets.

Stoinis is someone who can handle pressure very well. In chase scenarios, his explosive and impactful batting can help the Kings pull off improbable victories, especially given the fact that they lack firepower in the middle order. 

Hence, Stoinis, another strong right-arm pace option, will be a good alternative to Lockie Ferguson in the playing XI.
