Indian cricket has produced several exciting fast bowlers over the last decade. However, very few have generated the kind of excitement that Mayank Yadav created when he burst onto the scene for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024.
Every spell he bowled came with one simple promise. India had finally discovered a genuine express pacer capable of consistently troubling world-class batters with raw pace, bounce and relentless aggression.
Unfortunately, just when the country believed it had found its next pace sensation, injuries pulled Mayank away from the spotlight. What followed was nearly two years filled with rehabilitation, setbacks and unanswered questions over whether Indian cricket would ever witness the same Mayank Yadav again. However, at the Harare Sports Club against Zimbabwe, that promise was finally fulfilled.
Returning to international cricket after a prolonged injury layoff, Mayank produced a breathtaking spell of 2/18 that dismantled Zimbabwe's top order and reminded everyone why India had invested so much faith in him.
The Promise Mayank Yadav Made In IPL 2024
Before IPL 2024, Yadav was largely an unknown name outside domestic cricket. Lucknow Super Giants had signed him ahead of IPL 2022 but injuries denied him an opportunity. Even after missing another season because of a hamstring injury, the franchise continued backing him, believing they possessed a once-in-a-generation fast bowler.
Their faith was justified almost immediately. Making his IPL debut against Punjab Kings, Mayank claimed figures of 3/27 while consistently bowling above 150 kmph. He followed it up with an even better spell of 3/14 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, touching 156.7 kmph, the fastest delivery of IPL 2024.
More importantly, he became the first player in IPL history to win the Player of the Match award in each of his first two matches.
Those performances were never just about wickets. His steep bounce, heavy length and effortless pace offered Indian cricket something it had rarely possessed. An express fast bowler capable of intimidating batters purely through speed. That was the promise Mayank Yadav made to Indian cricket.

Two Years Of Injuries Almost Broke The Dream
Unfortunately, the biggest battle of Mayank's career never happened on a cricket field. Soon after announcing himself in the IPL, injuries began piling up.
A side strain during IPL 2024 was followed by a lower-back stress fracture after his T20I debut against Bangladesh later that year. Just when he was nearing a comeback, a freak toe injury during rehabilitation delayed his recovery once again.
Another back-related setback ruled him out for large parts of 2025, while recurring fitness concerns meant he spent considerably more time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence than on the cricket field.
Ironically, Mayank's biggest opponent became his own body. The pacer who had frightened IPL batters with 155-plus kmph thunderbolts suddenly became better known through injury bulletins than match reports.
Even his IPL 2026 comeback failed to inspire confidence. Representing Lucknow Super Giants once again, Mayank Yadav played four matches but failed to take a single wicket while conceding runs at an economy exceeding 11 runs per over.
Questions naturally emerged over whether he had lost the pace and hostility that once made him India's most exciting bowling prospect.
Harare Proved The Promise Was Never Lost
India entered the Zimbabwe series searching desperately for positives after suffering a disastrous UK tour. Following a 2-0 T20I series defeat against Ireland and a 4-0 whitewash in England, the Indian bowling attack came under severe criticism.
With several frontline pacers unavailable, the selectors placed their trust in an inexperienced pace unit led by Mayank Yadav. He responded immediately.
Mayank dismissed Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the innings before removing Dion Myers inside the powerplay. More importantly, he consistently bowled in the high-140 kmph range, extracting awkward bounce and seam movement throughout his spell.
His figures of 2/18 eventually earned him the Player of the Match award. Mayank had promised India genuine pace. Against Zimbabwe, he finally delivered it on the international stage.
What Should India's Plan Be From Here With Mayank Yadav?
Yadav's comeback could not have arrived at a better time. India are entering a fresh T20 World Cup cycle while simultaneously managing the workloads of senior fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah.
The team management desperately needs another genuine strike bowler capable of attacking batters with the new ball rather than simply containing runs. Mayank Yadav possesses exactly that skill set. However, unlike previous occasions, the BCCI must resist the temptation of rushing him through an overloaded schedule.
His two-year injury timeline clearly proves that careful workload management will determine whether India enjoy Mayank's services for the next decade or continue watching him move between rehabilitation centres and cricket grounds.
