With the IPL 2026 on the horizon, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise finds itself at a crossroads after a deeply underwhelming run in IPL 2025 last year. Under the leadership of new captain Rishabh Pant, the team managed to secure just six wins and sustained eight defeats from its 14 league matches to finish seventh on the points table.

Failing to make it to the playoffs in each of the last two editions of the tournament, LSG will be eager to move past previous disappointment and mount a serious push for their maiden IPL title this time around.

As Rishabh Pant and co. gear up for another crack at LSG’s elusive maiden silverware, here is a brief look at their SWOT analysis ahead of IPL 2026.

LSG squad for IPL 2026

Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni, Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke, Himmat Singh, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, Shahbaz Ahmed, Arshin Kulkarni, Mohammed Shami, Arjun Tendulkar, Mayank Yadav, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, M Siddharth, Digvesh Rathi, Prince Yadav, Akash Singh, Wanindu Hasaranga, Anrich Nortje, Mukul Choudhary, Naman Tiwari, Akshat Raghuwanshi and Josh Inglis.

Strengths of LSG

Explosive top-order

For all of LSG’s shortcomings, their top order seems to be firing on all cylinders. With the opening combination of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh, backed by hard-hitting radical Nicholas Pooran at either number three or number four, the Lucknow franchise boasts a formidable top-order capable of taking the game away from opponents in a matter of overs.

Marsh even finished the IPL 2025 season last year as one of its leading run-makers, aggregating over 600 runs at a staggering strike rate of 163.70.

Nicholas Pooran 52443.66196.25

Indian middle-order core

LSG’s middle order, comprising uncapped Indian batters Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad, has shown encouraging signs in recent times. Both players have displayed impressive form and possess a distinctive ability of accelerating the scoring rate in the backend of the innings.

While Badoni underwent an impressive IPL 2025 for the LSG, Samad recently played a crucial role in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic 2025-26 Ranji Trophy winning campaign. Moreover, the J&K batter holds an IPL strike rate of above 150 after playing 52 innings.

Presence of the experienced Mohammed Shami

Prior to the IPL 2026 auction late last year, the LSG franchise traded in legendary Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami from SRH.

The presence of a vastly experienced campaigner like Shami significantly bolsters LSG’s pace attack, and the speedster will enter the upcoming edition on a trail of a prolific Indian domestic season, picking up 68 wickets across all three formats for Bengal in just 27 innings.

Weaknesses of LSG

Injury-prone Indian pacers

While Mohammed Shami adds immense experience to LSG’s pace attack, the injury history of some of the other Indian fast bowlers in the team remains an area of concern for the franchise.

Mayank Yadav recently made his return to competitive cricket after missing a major part of IPL 2025 last year. Avesh Khan was cleared by the BCCI medical staff just a couple of months ago, and Mohsin Khan has struggled with his share of injuries in the past.

Under-fire captain with plenty to prove

LSG captain Rishabh Pant charted just 269 runs in 13 innings in IPL 2025 at an underwhelming average of 24.45. Notably, the blistering wicketkeeper-batter scored 118 of those runs in a single innings, highlighting his otherwise inconsistent campaign.

His leadership also remained largely ineffective for the LSG, as they finished seventh on the IPL 2025 points table. Moreover, Pant recently suffered an injury and will be expected to return to competitive cricket through IPL 2026 after a two-month layoff.

All things considered, Pant will have plenty to prove as he looks to rediscover both his batting rhythm and leadership impact in IPL 2026.

Opportunities for LSG

Arjun Tendulkar to build a reputation as a reliable fast bowler

Arjun Tendulkar will be joining LSG for IPL 2026 after serving the Mumbai Indians for five seasons. However, throughout his five-year stint, the left-arm seamer received just five opportunities in the playing XI and did not feature in a single match during IPL 2025.

A fresh chapter with LSG will not only give Arjun a new environment and greater opportunities to prove himself, it also gives him a chance to step out of his father Sachin Tendulkar’s towering shadow and carve an identity of his own in IPL.

Josh Inglis to establish himself as dynamic wicketkeeper-batter

LSG nabbed Australian stumper Josh Inglis after Punjab Kings let go of him prior to the IPL 2026 auction last year.

While the 31-year-old might not be available for the entire season this time around, he can still provide valuable firepower in the middle order and add depth to the wicketkeeping department, in case captain Rishabh Pant gets injured midway into the tournament.

Threats for LSG

Dismal record at Ekana Stadium

Unlike many successful teams in IPL history, the LSG franchise has failed to maximize its home advantage. Even in IPL 2025 last year, the LSG managed to secure just two wins and sustained five defeats from seven matches at their home ground, the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Moreover, the franchise lost four of those matches in succession at the iconic venue to bow out of the season’s playoffs race.

Pressure to deliver after successive playoffs misses

While IPL 2026 will see several players don the LSG jersey for the first time in their respective careers, the team as a whole may still feel the heat after missing out on the playoffs in the last two seasons. As a result, the franchise could face heightened expectations to finally return to the top-four race this time around.
