In a major setback for South Africa, batter Jordan Hermann has been ruled out of the remaining matches of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The update was confirmed by the Proteas through their official communication on Tuesday, March 17.

The young left-handed batter suffered a right hamstring injury during the first T20I match on Sunday. The game took place at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. While fielding during the match, Hermann experienced discomfort in his leg.

As a result, Jordan Hermann had to leave the field during the game. Later in the match, he did not return to open the batting for the Proteas. 

After the match, the team medical staff carried out scans. The reports confirmed a grade two tear in his hamstring. Therefore, Hermann has been ruled out of the remaining matches of the T20I series.

In an official statement, the Proteas confirmed the injury update regarding Hermann. 

“Dafabet Warriors batter Jordan Hermann has been ruled out of the remainder of the five-match T20 International (T20I) series against New Zealand with a right hamstring injury, “ the statement said.

South Africa announce no replacement

Notably, Hermann’s absence could impact the South African squad. The 24-year-old earned his place in the national team after strong performances in the SA20 during the 2025–26 season.

During the tournament, Hermann scored 273 runs in 10 innings. In addition, he maintained a strike rate of 137.19 along with an average of 34.13.

Meanwhile, it is also important to note that South Africa have not announced a replacement for Hermann so far. 

What happened in the First T20I?

Talking about the match, the first T20I of the series saw a strong performance from South Africa. After winning the toss, New Zealand decided to bat first. However, the South African bowlers delivered an excellent performance and dismissed the hosts for 91 runs in 14.3 overs.

New Zealand’s top scorer was James Neesham, who scored 26 runs from 21 balls, including two fours and one six. In addition, captain Mitchell Santner scored 15 runs, while Cole McConchie also contributed 15 runs. Furthermore, Bevon Jacobs added 10 runs from 7 balls.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s bowling attack was led by debutant Nqobani Mokoena, who took three wickets for 26 runs. In addition, Gerald Coetzee, Ottneil Baartman, and captain Keshav Maharaj claimed two wickets each, strengthening the bowling effort.

While chasing the target of 92 runs, South Africa approached the innings with control and patience. Wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen played a key role in the run chase. He scored an unbeaten 45 runs from 48 balls, including two fours and two sixes.

Eventually, South Africa reached the target in 16.4 overs, losing only three wickets. As a result, the Proteas secured a seven-wicket victory with 20 balls remaining.

South Africa currently lead the five-match T20I series 1–0 after the convincing win in the opening match.
