The Bloemfontein-born, Morne Van-Wyk is a former cricketer of South Africa and did everything he could to get a sustained run in the Proteas side but unfortunately was around during the Mark Boucher era.
Van Wyk enjoyed a wonderful first-class career appearing in 155 matches and was fabulous behind the stumps, taking 405 catches and 16 stumps donning the big gloves. This impressive record didn’t go completely unnoticed by the South African selectors. Van-Wyk got an opportunity in South Africa’s one-day side to play in England in 2003 and he ultimately made his debut in the final match at the Lord scoring 17 runs in a low-scoring match.
Once considered to be Mark Boucher’s long-term replacement, Van-Wyk fell short of opportunities. Then with the advent of the exceptionally talented AB de Villiers, his hopes of an international career were further diminished. In a short stint at the international stages, he got to run out for the Proteas 25 times in limited-overs cricket and wasn’t able to break into the Test side. Despite that, he became a regular of the South Africa A team and Knights domestically. Playing some crucial knocks opening the batting for the Dolphins, he was the skipper of the side who led from the front to win them the final against Cape Cobras in the 2014 Ram Slam T20 Challenge.
At 42 years of age, Van-Wyk featured in the 2021 Road World Safety Series playing for the South Africa Legends. He slammed an unbeaten half-century as South Africa Legends chased down the 161 run target in the quarter-finals of the premier tournament ultimately losing to Sri Lankan Legends in the semi-final.
