We have a day's gap here at Sharjah and shall return on the 16th of October with both the semifinals. South Africa Champions vs England Champions for the first semifinal at 5 PM IST (3:30 PM Local Time). That shall be followed by Australia Champions vs West Indies for the second semifinal at 9 PM IST (7:30 PM Local Time). Do join us for the live coverage of both games without fail.
South Africa have ended the league stage flawlessly with 5 wins in 5 games. They will be high on confidence walking into that first semifinal in a couple of days' time. It has not been the ideal debut season for Bangladesh Champions. Apart from a fine win against India Champions, they simply did not impress a lot. Had they been a little more professional at times, they could probably have notched up a couple of more wins. Next year maybe.
Faf du Plessis (South Africa Champions):"[On the bowling intensity] Really good. You can just look at guys in the field and see where their intensity is. All in. That really shows that the guys are really competitive and that is what you want. Even some of the guys that have not played cricket for a long time, kept their bodies on the line. The wicket there, if we kept it simple, there was something in it for the bowlers and they did it really well.
[On the firepower in the batting] The guys have been batting unbelievably. It is rare that you feel that there are a lot of batters in some good form. The way Ingram, JP, AB, Levi, there are a few guys that are batting beautifully at the moment. For me, the biggest way on being successful is that the guys are very adaptable. They are not trying to smoke everything for six because sometimes the wicket like today was a great example. It was not the kind of wicket where you can just come in and smash balls all over the place. So, JP played an excellent innings in the way he absorbed a little bit. Almost like old school one-day cricket. Play good shots and pick your last 5 overs to cash in. The way him and Ingram did that was unbelievable.
[On his dry run as a batter] Legends cricket is hard. I am just struggling for a little bit of tempo. Batting for me has always been about rhythm. I need that to be in control of my own technique, and it is something I am not getting at the moment. It is just the case of spending time in the middle and hopefully I have up saved up for the semifinals and the finals. Luckily for the team, we have got guys in some great form. That is letting me off the hook. I would really like to contribute with bat as well. Hopefully, it happens in the semis and the finals.
[On if him or AB de Villiers will lead in the semifinals] AB is really good. This is his team. His whole year is about coming here and playing in this competition, so he has done a fantastic job. He has worked so hard the last 10-15 days. He has put his body on the line. He also had a few back issues. So today I was just like, 'You go and relax, take it easy. You have done a lot of hard work. Get yourself fresh and ready for the semifinals.'
[On facing England in the semifinals] If I am honest with you, I think I see them as one of the two best teams of the competition. If you look at the way they stack up, they have got a dangerous top order and there is some good bowling in their team. I think in terms of balance on paper, the game is never played on paper, but you feel like it is a longer batting line up. The same is with us. They have some quality bowling, good variety. If you had asked me at the beginning of the tournament, I would have said us and them in the final. The way they have been playing but last couple of games just slipped down. It is going to be a big game for us. We have been really good in this competition. 5 from 5. We have been clinical in the way that we have gone about different phases of the game so hopefully it is a repeat in the semifinals."
Mohammad Mahmudullah (Bangladesh Champions captain):"(Was your only hope of making it to the semis bowling them out for 150 or less?) Yeah, probably that was our biggest chance. They're a gun team, and they're playing some really good cricket. The wicket wasn't that easy upfront, but JP and Colin batted really well and took the game away from us.
(On whether chasing it in 11.5 overs was realistic) Had we bowled them out at 160-odd, maybe we could have had a chance. But chasing 200-odd in 11 overs is a tough ask. Wicket was much better compared to the first innings. They bowled in good areas, we played some less shots and fell behind in the run-chase.
(Experience of the WCL for the first time?) The boys have enjoyed every moment of it. The standard of playing cricket has been outstanding. You see some big names playing here. Hopefully, if we get the chance some other time, we can come back and put up a better show."
JP Duminy (POTM):"[On his knock] It was a tricky wicket in some way. They bowled some good lengths in the first 10 overs. Pretty good change ups as well. We found it tough to get some momentum going. At the halfway mark, we had a discussion about just playing what was in front of us. Fortunately, we got some momentum especially with Colin at the other end. He hit a few boundaries and took the pressure away from me. Rotating the strike was important as well. Through that we found some momentum as a partnership.
[On still playing so well after retiring back in 2019] At the end of the day, we obviously put in a little bit of training for it. We still come out here and put in a good performance. We came this year as defending champions so there is certainly a pride in playing for the South African badge in whatever tournament you are playing. It is going well so far and hopefully we can finish it off well.
[On whether he will continue to bat at 3 or get pushed down with AB de Villiers returning] Yeah, we have got a day off tomorrow, so we will have to have a conversation with the captain. Look, whatever the team needs is most critical. We have got some real firepower up front. We will assess and see on how it works out for us."
