Player Bio

Okuhle Cele, born on 9 July 1997 in Durban, South Africa, has steadily built a reputation as one of the most promising fast bowlers to emerge from South Africa’s domestic cricket circuit. A right-arm fast-medium bowler known for his control, pace, and ability to strike early with the new ball, Cele’s cricketing journey has been marked by consistent progress, determination, and a growing sense of maturity in his bowling craft.

He first caught attention when he made his Twenty20 debut for KwaZulu-Natal in the 2016 Africa T20 Cup against Boland, quickly making an impression with his sharp deliveries and natural athleticism. The same year saw him earn his first-class debut in the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup, followed shortly by his List A debut in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge — a rapid progression that underscored the potential selectors saw in him.

Cele’s performances soon began to speak for themselves. His ability to maintain tight lines and generate movement even on placid surfaces has made him a dependable strike bowler for his teams. In List A and T20 formats, his adaptability shines through — taking key wickets during crucial moments, often breaking partnerships and applying pressure when it matters most.

His impressive domestic performances earned him a spot in the Durban Heat squad for the inaugural Mzansi Super League in 2018, giving him exposure to the country’s top T20 competition. Three years later, in January 2021, his hard work paid off with a national call-up to South Africa’s T20I squad for their series against Pakistan — a proud milestone for the young fast bowler from KwaZulu-Natal.

Currently representing Northerns, Cele continues to be one of the most dependable seamers in the domestic arena. His economy rate and consistency with the ball have made him a key part of his side’s bowling attack, while his work ethic off the field has earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike. Though batting remains a secondary skill, his lower-order resilience often adds useful runs when the team needs it most.

Still in his 20s, Okuhle Cele represents the next generation of South African fast bowlers — quick, disciplined, and hungry for success. His journey so far reflects patience and persistence, and with continued development, he stands poised to cement his place not only in domestic cricket but also on the international stage.
