The New Zealand vs South Africa T20I series has taken a sharp turn with the hosts grabbing a 2-1 lead after a thumping win in Auckland. What started as a promising tour for the Proteas has quickly turned into a reality check with their batting unit falling like a house of cards in the last two games.

Heading into the 4th T20I at Sky Stadium, Wellington, South Africa are under pressure. Their bowling has done the job in patches, but the batting, especially the top order, has been a major concern. With the series on the line, expect some bold calls from the management.

Openers and top order: Tony de Zorzi, Wiaan Mulder, Connor Esterhuizen

The top order has been South Africa’s biggest headache in this series. Tony de Zorzi has struggled throughout the tour, managing scores of 2, 1, and 15, and has looked short of confidence at the crease.

At this stage of the series, persisting with him would be more of a gamble than a calculated decision. But South Africa is likely to continue with him as there’s a lack of quality batters in the squad.

Wiaan Mulder’s promotion to the opening slot hasn’t quite worked either with returns of 16 and 0 in the last two games, but given the lack of specialist options in the squad, he might still be backed for one more opportunity.

Connor Esterhuizen showed promise with a composed 45 not out in the first T20I, but has failed to build on that start in the following matches.

Middle order and all-rounders: Jason Smith Rubin Hermann, Dian Forrester, George Linde

The middle order in the South Africa playing XI vs New Zealand has not exactly covered itself in glory either, but it has at least shown glimpses of resistance. Jason Smith, who has been batting in the middle order, has blown hot and cold. However, he will retain his place and bolster the middle order.

Rubin Hermann remains the preferred wicketkeeping option, even though he hasn’t converted his starts into anything substantial so far.

Dian Forrester has looked decent in patches but hasn’t been able to play a defining innings yet. George Linde has been the standout performer in this phase with impactful cameos. His ability to counterattack has often been the only thing preventing South Africa from posting even lower totals.

Bowlers: Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Nqobani Mokoena, Ottneil Baartman

The bowling unit remains South Africa’s biggest strength, but there could be a slight tweak ahead of the fourth T20I. Gerald Coetzee has led the attack well, while Nqobani Mokoena, despite going wicketless in the last two matches, remains a key wicket-taking option after his match-winning spell in the opener. Keshav Maharaj continues to control the middle overs as captain.

Lutho Sipamla featured in the third T20I but was slightly expensive, finishing with figures of 1/26 in just 2.2 overs. While he did pick up a wicket, he struggled to contain the flow of runs, especially as New Zealand chased the target comfortably.

Given that, South Africa might consider bringing back Ottneil Baartman, who has been more consistent in maintaining control and picking up timely wickets earlier in the series.

Andile Simelane remains an option as an additional pace bowler, but if South Africa look for better control, Baartman could edge ahead for this must-win clash.
