Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the pinnacle of astonishing batting displays. 

Moreover, the league rewards the batter with the most runs in an edition with the prestigious IPL Orange Cap, which is considered one of the top individual honours in the tournament.

Who has won the most Orange Cap in IPL? 

David Warner has won the most Orange Caps in IPL history, claiming the prestigious award as many as three times. He dominated the tournament's run-scoring charts in 2015, 2017, and 2019 while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Indian legendary batter, Virat Kohli, is the undisputed ‘King’ of the IPL. The RCB great holds multiple all-time records, including the most runs scored and the most runs scored and the centuries in the tournament.

However, among the many records held by Virat Kohli, the most Orange Caps isn’t the one. Instead, the remarkable achievement belongs to former Australian opener David Warner.

Who won the first Orange Cap in IPL?

Notably, while playing for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Shaun Marsh won the Orange Cap in the inaugural season of 2008, scoring 616 runs in 11 matches. 

Back then, March was relatively lesser known in the world of cricket. However, he soon went on to feature regularly for Australia on the international stage after his breakout exploits in the IPL 2008

Legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar also won the Orange Cap, playing for Mumbai Indians in 2010 when he scored 618 runs in 15 games. West Indies’ Chris Gayle was the next to stake his claim on the top prize and became the first player to win consecutive Orange Caps in 2011 and 2012.

Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gayle scored 608 runs in IPL 2011 and followed that season with 733 runs in 15 matches in IPL 2012.
