15-year-Old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Goes Past Chris Gayle: Most Sixes In A Single IPL Season

With an IPL title each to their names, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) face each other in the high-octane Eliminator 1 of the IPL 2026 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium, in New Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Notably, this marks the teenage prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s first-ever playoff appearance in the coveted tournament. Before today’s game, the batting sensation has earned unending praise for his batting flair this season, scoring 583 runs at a staggering strike rate of 232.37. 

Since the beginning of the season, he has been vocal about winning the trophy for his team, and the same thought would cross through his mind when he walked out against the Orange Army. 

On top of that, in a recent video on the former England international Kevin Pietersen’s YouTube channel named “The Switch”, Sooryavanshi, without any hesitation, announced that he wants to break legendary batter Chris Gayle’s unbeatable all-time record highest score of 175 in the IPL. 

Playing his maiden IPL knockout, the 15-year-old broke one of many records held by the RCB legend. Sooryavanshi broke the record for most sixes in a single IPL season.

Most 6s by a Batter in a Single IPL Season

5. Jos Buttler - 45 Sixes (Rajasthan Royals), 2022

The English batter, Jos Buttler, hit a tournament-high 45 sixes in 17 matches for the Rajasthan Royals during the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

This explosive six-hitting helped him claim the IPL Orange Cap with 863 runs, tying Virat Kohli's record for the most centuries (four) in a single IPL edition.

4. Chris Gayle - 51 Sixes (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), 2013

In the 2013 IPL season, Chris Gayle hit exactly 51 sixes while playing for the RCB. . This phenomenal tally included his record-breaking 17-six innings against the Pune Warriors India, where he registered the highest individual T20 score of 175 not out.

3. Andre Russell - 52 Sixes (Kolkata Knight Riders), 2019

Among the many West Indies legends to have dominated the IPL, Andre Russell has a long-standing legacy with the KKR. In the 2019 edition, he smashed 52 sixes in just 14 innings, securing the tournament's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award with 510 runs at a staggering strike rate of 204.81. 

2. Chris Gayle - 59 Sixes (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), 2012

The former Jamaican legend, Gayle’s 59 sixes in the 2012 Indian Premier League for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore), stand as one of the most destructive seasons in T20 cricket history. 

It also earned him the Orange Cap for the most runs that year (733 runs), though his all-time single-season record was recently surpassed.

1. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi - 60 Sixes (Rajasthan Royals), 2026

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his attacking batting in the IPL 2026 Eliminator 1 and brought up Rajasthan Royals’ 50-run opening partnership with another six.

Sakib Hussain bowled a good-length delivery outside off, but the 15-year-old picked it early and lofted it beautifully over deep extra cover. With that hit, Sooryavanshi also matched Chris Gayle’s record for most sixes in a single IPL season with 59 maximums.

However, in the same over, the Bihar prodigy smashed his stateman for another six. In pursuit, Sooryavanshi broke the RCB great’s record for most sixes in an IPL season.
