The left-handed batter managed only four runs before Brad Evans castled him in the second over of the innings to draw the first blood for the home side. After winning the toss, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh elected to bat first in the ODI series opener against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club. The tourists had a shaky start to their innings, with Evans getting rid of Head early in the powerplay. Thus, Travis Head surpassed Adam Gilchrist, adding an embarrassing record to his tally as an Australian opener. As he is known for his blitzkreig at the top order, boasting a strike rate of more than 100, expectations were high from Head when he walked out to open the innings alongside stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh. However, the destructive batter could hit a single boundary before Brad Evans shattered his stumps in the second over. Thus, Head departed for four runs, registering the lowest score by an Australian opener in first ODI innings in Zimbabwe. Adam Gilchrist's 14-run knock in Bulawayo was the lowest before Head eclipsed the former cricketer in Harare. Interestingly, this was Mitchell Marsh's first ODI innings as an opener in Zimbabwe. Among other batters, Aaron Finch, Phil Hughes, Mark Waugh, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting are the other Australian cricketers to open the batting in Zimbabwe, registering scores of 67, 51, 106, 105* and 87*, respectively, on their first outings. However, he has struggled to get going in international cricket in 2026. This year, Head has managed only 395 runs at a modest average of 32.91, with his obsession for the cut shot backfiring on him in recent times. Statistically, Travis Head has been bowled on six of 12 occasions across formats in 2026. His tendency to cut the ball despite little room outside the off stump has led to his downfall, with Head chopping on to the stumps five of those six times.
