Tom Latham enters rare club [Source: BLACKCAPS/x]
New Zealand pulverized England by 160 runs in the third Test in Nottingham to seal the three-match series 2-1. In doing so, the ‘Black Caps’ also became the first team in history to win a series in England after losing the opening match of the tour.
Captain courageous Tom Latham led his team from the front from the outset, stroking his way to a regal 151 off 214 balls during his epic 317-run opening partnership with Devon Conway. With handy contributions from nearly every member of the New Zealand XI, Latham has now entered one of Test cricket's most exclusive clubs, joining a select group of legendary captains.
Tom Latham does what Ricky Ponting could not, enters rare captaincy club
Tom Latham has now become only the sixth captain in Test history to win an overseas series in both, India and England. Under the leadership of Latham, New Zealand secured a historic 3-0 result in India back in November 2024.
On June 29, 2026; the ‘Black Caps’ ravaged hosts England in the decider to crush Ben Stokes’ farewell party, and seal the three-match rubber by a 2-1 margin in the process.

Previously, the feat of winning an overseas series in India and England was achieved only by five different captains, including three from the West Indies and one each from Australia and Pakistan. Interestingly, champion Australian Ricky Ponting is not a part of the exclusive club, despite leading one of the most invincible sides in Test history for a major part of the 2000s decade.
Moreover, Ponting also frequently toured England and India as part of the Australian side for multiple Ashes and BGT campaigns. Here is a look at the exclusive club of Test captains who have recorded overseas Test series wins in India and England.
- John Goddard (West Indies)
- Richie Benaud (Australia)
- Garry Sobers (West Indies)
- Clive Lloyd (West Indies)
- Imran Khan (Pakistan)
- Tom Latham (New Zealand)
When Tom Latham’s New Zealand blanked India
Tom Latham’s New Zealand completed a 3-0 routing of Rohit Sharma’s Team India in November 2024 to seal their three-match away series.
In the third Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, the visitors folded up a strong Indian line-up for just 112 on Day 3 to win a low-scoring thriller by 25 runs. Rachin Ravindra and Will Young were among the leading run-makers for the tourists in the series, while ace spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner accounted for most wickets.
Daryl Mitchell, Zak Foulkes decimate England after Latham ton
Centuries from Latham and Devon Conway, as well as four-wicket haul for Nathan Smith engineered New Zealand’s 84-run lead at the halfway stage of the Nottingham Test.
Daryl Mitchell scored a courageous hundred in the second New Zealand innings to set England an improbable target of 373 with a day and a half-a-session in hand. Zak Foulkes picked up three key wickets to roll out the hosts for just 212 as New Zealand clinched the series 2-1.
Mitchell won the ‘Player of the Match’ award, as New Zealand spoiled Ben Stokes’ retirement party at his home ground.
