Suryakumar Yadav led Team India from the front with a scintillating knock against USA on the opening day of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The seasoned pro smeared 84 unbeaten runs from just 49 balls, including 32 runs from the final two overs alone to blaze India to a competitive 161-9.

Batting at number four, Suryakumar Yadav arrived to the middle at a precarious 45-2, soon to be 46-4 around the powerplay phase. Through the course of his counterattacking knock, the 35-year-old also attained a slew of records and milestones.

Suryakumar Yadav goes past KL Rahul in T20 World Cups

Suryakumar Yadav recorded the 25th half-century of his T20I career. The innings also marked his sixth fifty-plus score for India in T20 World Cup matches, thus going past KL Rahul’s (5) tally.

As of now, Suryakumar Yadav only falls behind former captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the elite list.

Suryakumar Yadav third fastest captain to complete 1,000 T20I runs

Suryakumar Yadav also completed 1,000 runs as captain, reaching the milestone figure with a boundary to race to 11*. In doing so, the cricketer became only the fourth Indian captain to reach 1,000 T20I runs, and the third fastest behind former skippers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Suryakumar Yadav recorded the second highest individual score by any Indian captain in the history of T20 World Cups. The senior pro went past Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with both having previously cracked 57 runs each in the 2021 and 2024 editions respectively.

Suryakumar Yadav raced past Babar Azam, and fell just behind vintage former opener Chris Gayle for notching up the highest score on captaincy debut in a T20 World Cup game. Back in 2009 against Australia, Gayle tonked a match-winning 88 at the Oval.

Suryakumar concluded his innings just four runs behind to miss out on the rare world record.

Suryakumar Yadav bludgeoned 84* off 49 balls to record one of the highest individual scores by any Indian player in a T20 World Cup match. Lone centurion and former cricketer Suresh Raina continues to remain at the top of India’s elite list.

Suryakumar Yadav’s innings boosted India to a competitive 161-9 in 20 overs. At one stage of the game, the ‘Men in Blue’ had slipped to 77-6 in 13 overs.
