Ahead of the India vs England fifth T20I at Southampton, Shreyas Iyer have equalled MS Dhoni in one of the most worrisome achievements for India. The new T20I captain of India has now come at par with the 'Captain Cool' in terms of captaincy duties with a solid record.
The feat achieved by Shreyas Iyer now overlooks a difficult reign seen by former skipper Suryakumar Yadav and even by Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill. As the India vs England 5th T20I toss took place, the Punjab Kings captain achieved a rare feat.
Shreyas Iyer ties with MS Dhoni for most consecutive toss wins
In a massive achievement, Iyer has successfully joined MS Dhoni for the most consecutive toss wins by an Indian captain in T20Is. Shreyas has won seven consecutive tosses since becoming Team India captain in June 2026, matching MS Dhoni's record.
Dhoni, who led the Men in Blue in T20Is from May 2010 to February 2012, also won seven consecutive tosses. With this feat, Iyer has now equalled Dhoni's record, while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma follow with streaks of six and five consecutive toss wins, respectively.
Most Consecutive Toss wins by an India captain in T20Is:
- 7 – MS Dhoni (May 2010 – Feb 2012)
- 7* – Shreyas Iyer (Jun 2026 – Jul 2026)*
- 6 – Virat Kohli (Aug 2019 – Dec 2019)
- 5 – Rohit Sharma (Feb 2020 – Feb 2022)
- 5 – MS Dhoni (Sep 2007)
While toss wins may not be regarded as a decisive factor in the outcome of a T20I match, they still carry significant importance, especially considering India's poor track record in these events. Suryakumar Yadav had some of the worst luck at the toss during his tenure as captain.

India’s woeful track record in winning tosses
Speaking of the Men in Blue's poor record at the toss, under Suryakumar Yadav, India lost seven of their nine tosses during the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite that, the team overcame their poor luck to lift the trophy, defeating New Zealand by a dominant 96-run margin in the final on March 8.
India's luck at the toss had been particularly worrying before Shreyas Iyer took charge. The team endured a streak of 11 consecutive toss losses between November 2023 and January 2024. Adding to those woes, India also lost 15 consecutive tosses between January 2025 and July 2025.
However, all of that has changed since Shreyas Iyer took over as captain. His remarkable run of success at the toss has completely turned India's fortunes around, with the skipper consistently enjoying the rub of the green before the first ball is bowled.
How have winning tosses impacted India in T20 matches?
Despite India's long-standing struggles with the toss, the team's results have rarely been dictated by the outcome of the coin flip. India has consistently found ways to win regardless of whether they bat or bowl first.
Across international cricket, India have won 431 of the 780 matches in which they won the toss, a win percentage of 55.26%. Interestingly, even after losing the toss, they have still managed to win 413 of 780 matches, maintaining an impressive 52.95% success rate.
The difference of just over two percentage points highlights that toss results have had only a marginal impact on India's overall performances.
In T20Is, India have been even more remarkable, boasting the highest win percentage in the world after losing the toss, which is 64.91%, ahead of New Zealand and Australia.
