BPL Could Welcome Lahore Qalandars [Source: AFP]
Lahore Qalandars, one of the prominent franchises in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), could explore opportunities to become a part of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Their owner, Sameer Rana, has expressed a strong interest in a possible BPL venture.
The BPL is currently in a tough phase as BCB president Tamim Iqbal formally suspended it amid corruption and financial issues. The franchises that have repeatedly been involved in such scandals could be barred from the tournament in future.
PSL team owner comes out to support BPL
Hence, it’s quite possible that BPL opens the door for new owners in the future. And if that happens, Lahore Qalandars owner Sameer Rana is interested in buying a BPL team.
Talking to the media, Rana said that Bangladesh is close to his heart and that he would welcome an opportunity to become part of the BPL. He also admitted that the tournament is struggling for various reasons.
"Bangladesh is very close to my heart. I will look for opportunities to become part of Bangladesh cricket. Everything depends on what kind of opportunity comes our way. If we get the chance, we would definitely love to be part of the BPL,” Rana said.
However, Sameer Rana believes BPL is a great tournament. He apparently even talked to BCB chief Tamim Iqbal to share his valuable insights on the league’s revival.
“It is a fantastic tournament, although it has been struggling a little recently for various reasons. There is so much passion for cricket in both Bangladesh and Pakistan. The BPL should not be struggling like this. I have also spoken to Tamim bhai and shared some of my experiences with him,” he added.
Sameer Rana’s T20 League portfolio
Notably, Sameer Rana is not a rookie when it comes to operating T20 franchise league teams. He owns Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, a team that has won the title as many as three times.
He has been running the Qalandars successfully for 11 years. Apart from PSL, Rana also owns stakes in teams from South Africa's Global League, T10 cricket and Cricket Canada.
Hence, having Sameer Rana on board as a team owner would benefit BPL massively. His experience and understanding of operations would help the league revamp properly without any financial or corruption concerns.
