On Thursday, Australia and Bangladesh locked horns for the 2nd ODI at the Sher-e-Bangla in Dhaka. The hosts scripted history in the opening match, where the Tigers registered their first ODI win over the Kangaroos in 21 years.

Now, in the do-or-die match, Australia, again, were asked to bat first, and got off to an embarrassing start. The Men in Yellow lost three wickets for no runs on the board and brought their 55-year ODI legacy to shame with an unwanted feat.

Australia Break Their Own Record For Most Wickets Without Run On The Board

On the 4th ball of the 1st over, Australia opener Matthew Short threw his wicket away and registered his 3rd consecutive duck. Cooper Connolly was the next to depart as the southpaw returned to the pavilion with a golden duck.

Things got out of hand when Matthew Renshaw too scored a duck in the next over, leaving Australia struggling for 0/3 after 2 overs. With that, the Men in Yellow brought their 55-year ODI history to shame as the Kangaroos have never lost three wickets in ODIs without putting a run on the board.

The Josh Inglis-led side also became the first non-Asian side to lose 3 wickets for no runs. Overall, four sides have scripted this embarrassing feat. Here is the complete list.

Instances of Teams Losing Their First 3 Wickets for 0 Runs in an ODI:

  • Pakistan vs New Zealand, Birmingham, 1983
  • Pakistan vs South Africa, Lahore, 1997
  • Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Pietermaritzburg, 2003
  • Australia vs Bangladesh, Mirpur, 2026, Today*

Australia Go 4 Games With An Opening Partnership

The Men in Yellow are seriously missing Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh because it has now been four ODIs where Australia have not had any opening partnership. In the ongoing Bangladesh series, the Kangaroos lost their first wicket on a duck in the first ODI as well.

Further, in the last two ODIs against Pakistan, Australia failed to get any run on the board without losing a wicket as well.

Also, it is the 3rd instance in Australia cricket’s history that their both openers have scored ducks in an ODI match.

Both openers making a duck for Australia in a men's ODI:

  • South Africa, Brisbane, 2006
  • Pakistan, Lahore, 2022
  • Bangladesh, Mirpur, 2026

Why Are Travis Head And Mitchell Marsh Not Playing ODIs?

Notably, Australia are without their regular openers in Bangladesh. Also, they were without star openers in Pakistan as well. The Men in Yellow are without Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, which is hurting the Kangaroos.

For the unversed, Mitchell Marsh is nursing an injury and will be available for the T20Is. Meanwhile, Travis Head has been granted a personal leave and will return for the Test series against Bangladesh.
