Fielding and catching efficiency in the ongoing 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) has seen a historical low. Almost all IPL teams, barring Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have suffered a poor run on the field.

Moreover, many players, especially Punjab Kings’ Shashank Singh and Delhi Capitals’ Karun Nair, have garnered great scrutiny after dropping multiple catches in a single match. Their dropped catches changed the course of the game; thus were looked down upon.

In the same context, once again, a Mumbai Indians player has brought further shame after dropping a dolly in the ongoing IPL 2026 match number 58, played between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians at the iconic Dharamshala stadium.

MI all-rounder claims unwanted record, Becomes worst in a single IPL edition

Mumbai Indians’ star all-rounder Naman Dhir’s testing season as a fielder continues, as Jasprit Bumrah-led Mumbai Indians take on PBKS on Thursday.

Winning the toss, Bumrah invited the Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab to bat first. MI pacer duo, Deepak Chahar and Jasprit Bumrah, started confidently, with Bumrah producing a valuable chance in his very first over.

However, standing in the slip, Naman Dhir dropped a simple start forward catch of Prabhsimran Singh early in the game. It is worth noting that Prabhsimran, dropped by Naman, went on to play a quickfire knock of 57 off just 32 at a strike rate of 178.13.

Moreover, in the pursuit, Naman Dhir also earned himself an undesirable title in the IPL history. MI all-rounder joined the former KKR veteran, Robin Uthappa, in the list of most catches dropped in a single edition of the Indian Premier League.

List of players dropping the most catches in a single IPL edition:

  • 8 by Naman Dhir in 2026*
  • 8 by Robin Uthappa in 2015
  • 7 by Harshal Patel in 2024
  • 7 by Paul Valthaty in 2011

Not first time that an MI player’s dropped catch has brought him shame to the franchise

Before today, a dropped catch involving MI batter Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir proved to be extremely costly as Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinched a last-ball thriller against Mumbai Indians in Raipur.

The incident happened in the 18th over of the match when Krunal Pandya slammed the ball from Allah Ghazanfar towards the long-on boundary. Dhir completed the catch but could not control himself from crossing the boundary.

While he was able to throw the ball back into the ground in time, Tilak thought that it was already a six and did not go for the relay catch. It led to an animated chat between the two cricketers, and although the batters did not take a run, it proved to be quite costly as Krunal slammed two sixes in the over before his dismissal.

A quick glance at Naman Dhir’s IPL 2026

Retained for ₹5.25 Crore after a breakout 2025 season, Naman Dhir have been among the only performers with the bat for the MI in a forgettable IPL 2026

After establishing himself as a reliable finisher, Dhir has so far scored 303 runs with a strike rate of 150. He notably scored a fighting knock of 47 from 32 balls against RCB in Raipur.
