Joe Root continues to break records as an England player, as they take on Pakistan in the fourth ODI of the tri-series in Lahore on Sunday afternoon. As Root takes to the field in the game, he breaks into the top-3 most capped England ODI players.

Root is in decent form in the series, having scored 69 in the last match to complete his 8000 runs in the format, averaging over 50. With the World Cup 2027 coming up, Root is in line to become the highest-capped ODI player for the 2019 World Champions.

Joe Root goes past Paul Collingwood

Joe Root made his ODI debut against India in January 2013 in Rajkot and has since been a regular fixture in the playing XI — first at number 4 and now as a number 3. Since his debut, no other England batter has scored more runs in the format.

Injured Jos Buttler, among the active players is the only one ahead of Root in the list of most capped ODI players. Only two players have played over 200 ODIs for England and Root, at 198 is closing in on the elite list, consisiting of two former captains.

Most ODIs for England:

  1. Eoin Morgan - 225
  2. Jos Buttler - 204
  3. Joe Root - 198*
  4. Paul Collingwood - 197
  5. James Anderson - 194

England play for survival in Lahore

England batters scored an incredible 429/4 in their last match against Sri Lanka in the tri-series. However, the Lankans chased the score down in a dramatic fashion, with a ball left in the match. A game before that at the same venue in Rawalpindi, they failed to chase down 303 runs in the second innings.

As they take on Pakistan for the second time in the series, they fight to stay alive in the series. A win would mean their fixture against Sri Lanka on October 29 becomes a virtual semi-final, while a loss would knock them out. Unfortunately, in his milestone game, Root got out to 5 off 7, as England are reduced to 11/2 in 3 overs while batting first.
