Hashim Amla likely to join Bangladesh [Source: AFP]
South African legend Hashim Amla could be seen in Bangladesh’s dugout in the coming months, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board has reached out to him to join their coaching setup.
Amla retired in 2019 and has since been working as a broadcaster, while also spending some time as a mentor and consultant in various teams. None of these stints has been with any national team, which could change soon.
Amla likely to join Bangladesh support staff
Bangladesh, who have been in some positive rhythm in recent months, will travel to South Africa in November and December for an all-format series. According to Bangladeshi local media, the Bangladesh Cricket Board is also in talks with Amla to join them temporarily.
If things go as the board plans, Amla will be Bangladesh’s batting consultant for the tour, as the Asian team travel to South Africa for the first time since March 2022.
Quite a few players in the squad would be on their first tour of South Africa, which is usually a big test for Asian batters, so having Amla would help them navigate a few things better.
Bangladesh also recently toured Australia after a long time and caused an upset in the first Test. So, they will be pumped to have Amla’s experience on the tour, in the hope of another impressive display on the field.
What is Hashim Amla’s coaching experience?
The 43-year-old hung up his boots in international cricket in 2019, with 9282 Test runs, 8113 ODI runs and 1277 T20I runs, scoring 55 centuries across formats. He later ended his professional career in 2022 and has since been in the commentary box and in some dugouts.
Amla is not a full-time coach yet, but has served as a batting consultant for Cape Town Blitz, followed by a PSL 2020 tenure with Peshawar Zalmi as mentor. Later, he was made MI Cape Town’s batting coach in 2022, and his most recent coaching stint came with the Lions as batting coach in 2023.
Bangladesh will play two Tests in Johannesburg and Centurion from November 15 to 27, followed by three ODIs and three T20Is, ending the tour on December 13 in Centurion. So, a decision on whether Amla joins the setup is imminent.
