Shubman Gill is all set to captain India on Saturday (June 13) when they take on Afghanistan in the first ODI of the three-match series at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. The 26-year-old recently enjoyed a commanding victory over the same country when they faced each other in the Test match in Mullanpur.
Even though Gill is good at T20s and decent in Tests, his natural batting style suits ODIs. Therefore, ahead of this assignment, we take a look at the significant records that Shubman Gill can break in the upcoming India vs Afghanistan ODIs.
Set To Become Quickest Indian With 3000 ODI Runs
With an average of 55.71, Gill has made 2953 ODI runs at a strike rate of 99.02 after 61 innings. He is 47 runs away from joining the 3000-run club in ODIs, breaking Shikhar Dhawan’s record of quickest to get there.
Dhawan made 3000 ODI runs in 72 innings. He was the quickest Indian and ninth overall in the list of fastest to 3000 ODI runs. Virat Kohli, meanwhile, got there in 75 innings.

Having only played 61 innings, even if Gill takes 10 more innings for 47 ODI runs, which of course realistically won’t be the case, he will be the quickest to score 3000 runs in this format.
Gill was the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 ODI runs across all countries, doing so in just 38 innings. He got to 2500 ODI runs quickly as well, taking just 50 innings, the fewest among every batter among every country.
Fastest To Get 3000 ODI Runs
| Player | Country | Inns |
| Hashim Amla | South Africa | 57 |
| Shai Hope | West Indies | 67 |
| Fakhar Zaman | Pakistan | 67 |
2 Centuries Away To Break MS Dhoni's ODI Record
Shubman Gill has already smashed eight centuries in ODIs, along with 17 half-centuries. If he gets two more in the upcoming India Vs Afghanistan ODIs, he will go past the tally of MS Dhoni, who had nine centuries in the 50-over format.
Of course, Dhoni used to play as a finisher in the majority of his 347-match-long ODI career, but getting past that tally in such a short period of time would be a major accomplishment for Gill, who has only played 61 ODIs so far.
If Gill makes three centuries in three outings, he will also equal the century tally of Gautam Gambhir, who has 11 centuries in 147 ODIs.
Gill’s ODI career has just begun, and there will be many significant achievements on the road to breaking. However, he would like to improve his numbers even further in India vs Afghanistan ODIs to reach new heights.
The first ODI of the three-match series between India and Afghanistan will take place in Dharamsala's HPCA Stadium on June 13. The second and third ODIs will be in Lucknow and Chennai respectively, on June 17 and June 20.
