In a remarkable achievement, veteran England batter Jos Buttler surpassed Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene on the list of most successful batters in T20 World Cups. The keeper-batter attained the phenomenal feat in England's inaugural T20 World Cup match against Nepal at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Interestingly, Buttler also narrowed the gap with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's runs tally in this process.

After winning the toss, England captain Harry Brook chose to bat in the fifth T20 World Cup game against Nepal. The right-handed batter scored 26 runs before medium pacer Nandan Yadav got his prized scalp.

Jos Buttler becomes third highest run-getter in T20 World Cup history

Talismanic Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene is one of the most successful batters in T20 World Cups, having amassed 1016 runs in the tournament. Jayawardene was the third highest score in the tournament prior to the England vs Nepal match in Mumbai.

However, as Jos Buttler contributed 26 runs to England's tally, he went past the Lankan great, etching his name in history books. Currently, the batter has 1039 T20 World Cup runs at a healthy average of 41.56 and a strike rate of 147.37. He is England's most prolific performer in T20 World Cups, having struck five fifties and a century.

Most runs in T20 World Cups

  • Virat Kohli- 1292
  • Rohit Sharma- 1220
  • Jos Buttler- 1039
  • Mahela Jayawardene- 1016

The decorated Indian duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma claims the first two positions on the list, having amassed 1292 and 1220 runs, respectively. However, considering both have retired from the shortest format, Buttler has a golden opportunity to surpass them by the end of this World Cup.

Buttler, who led England to their maiden T20 World Cup win in 2022, needs 182 runs to go past Rohit Sharma. On the other hand, if he has an extraordinary World Cup and scores 253 more runs, he will eclipse Virat Kohli's tally of 1292 T20 World Cup runs.

Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook power England to a competitive total

After winning the toss and batting first, England had the worst possible start to the game, losing Phil Salt in the second over. The swashbuckling batter let the English team down with an ordinary outing, managing a solitary run in his maiden outing of the tournament.

However, Jacob Bethell came to England's rescue, hammering 55 runs off just 35 balls. The southpaw smashed four boundaries and as many sixes during his stay, ensuring England posted a competitive total on the board.

He was joined by skipper Harry Brook, who clobbered 53 runs with the help of four boundaries and three sixes. The duo added 71 crucial runs for the fourth wicket, setting the perfect foundation for Will Jacks to finish things off. The explosive finisher smashed 39 runs off 18 balls. As a result, England went on to post 184 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.
