In a massive development, Washington Sundar has been cleared to join the Indian team ahead of their second T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia. On Saturday, India had a positive start to their T20 World Cup campaign, defeating the United States by 29 runs. After the game concluded, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav revealed that Washington Sundar will join the squad before the group-stage match against Namibia, scheduled on February 12.

Washington Sundar's injury ruled him out of India's T20 World Cup opener against the USA, as he couldn't recover from a side strain that had sidelined him from the recently concluded home series against New Zealand.

Under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership, India had a good start to their T20 World Cup campaign. Despite reeling at 77 for six at one stage, India powered themselves to a competitive total of 161 runs, courtesy of Suryakumar's belligerent knock.

On a track with genuine assistance for the bowlers, Surya belted 84 runs off just 49 deliveries. His knock, glittered by ten boundaries and four sixes, ensured India had a defendable total for their formidable bowling attack.

As the co-hosts registered their first win of the tournament, Surya received the player of the match award for his heroics. At the post-match presentation, the Indian captain issued a massive update on Washington Sundar, confirming he would rejoin the team ahead of their encounter against Namibia.

"Washi is joining us in Delhi. Bumrah had a high fever because of the weather. Like Abhishek was under the weather, the rest are all fine," Suryakumar stated.

Washington Sundar's comeback to strengthen Indian lineup in T20 World Cup

Spin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar began his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence after being diagnosed with a side strain and a mild rib fracture. This is the reason why the off-spinner couldn't play the remainder of the New Zealand series after bowling just five overs in the ODI series opener.

However, as Sundar has recovered from the injury, he is expected to play a significant role for India in the T20 World Cup. India were recently hit with a major injury setback, with Harshit Rana being ruled out of the tournament.

Although the BCCI added Mohammed Siraj to the squad, Harshit Rana's absence meant India lost a valuable all-round asset before the tournament even began. Therefore, Sundar, being an all-rounder, can resolve the issue and be slotted down the order, adding depth to India's batting lineup.

Washington Sundar has played 58 T20Is for India, scalping 51 wickets at an economy of 6.92. He has also scored 254 runs, including a fifty, at a strike rate of 134.4, signifying his all-round prowess in the shortest format.

India's upcoming T20 World Cup matches

After securing a 29-run win over the USA, India are preparing to take on Namibia on February 12. They are scheduled to face arch-rivals Pakistan on February 15 before crossing swords against the Netherlands in their final group-stage contest on the 18th of the month.
