The Zimbabwe cricket team stunned Sri Lanka in match number 38 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Colombo. Chasing a stiff 179-run target at the R. Premadasa Stadium, unbeaten opener Brian Bennett and captain Sikandar Raza led from the front as the ‘Chevrons’ made it to the Super 8 as the undisputed leaders of Group B.

Zimbabwe’s recent triumph against Sri Lanka occurred mere days after Sikandar Raza’s troops walloped heavyweights Australia, underlining that their surge in the tournament is no flash in the pan but a statement of genuine intent.

The Zimbabwe cricket team finished the opening round of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the top of the Group B points table. In a group featuring Australia, tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka, Oman and giant-killers Ireland; the Chevrons secured three comprehensive wins in four games at a formidable NRR of 1.506.

The only game the African nation did not win in the group stage was their rain-affected clash against Ireland, which ended in a no result a couple of days ago.

In any case, Zimbabwe’s unbeaten finish in Group B has sparked a wave of some positive reactions on social media. A legion of cricket fans are taking to X and expressing their admirations for the Sikandar Raza-led side on their dream T20 World Cup return. Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to their insurgence.

ZIM vs SL: As it happened

Winning the toss and opting to bat first in match 38 of the 2026 T20 World Cup, hosts Sri Lanka charted 178-7 in 20 overs. Opening batter Pathum Nissanka smeared 62 runs off just 41 balls with eight elegant boundaries at the top of the order. Pavan Rathnayake at number four also chipped in with a quick 25-ball 44 in the middle overs.

For the Chevrons, bowlers Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans and Graeme Cremer picked up two wickets each in the innings.

Chasing 179, Zimbabwe started off with a 69-run opening partnership between Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani.

Captain Sikandar Raza at number four unleashed the match-defining act with a cracking 45 from just 26 balls. Despite his untimely dismissal in the penultimate over, Bennett raced to 63* and notched up the winning runs for Zimbabwe with Tony Munyonga (8* off 3).
