Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir attended a press conference hours ahead of the one-off Test against Afghanistan scheduled at Mullanpur, Chandigarh. He made a remark on India’s WTC final hopes, which set social media ablaze.

The Test will begin on June 6 at 9:00 AM IST. India will field a full-strength squad led by Shubman Gill. While his game is not a part of the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, the hosts are not leaving anything to chance.

They are treating this game as a preparation deck for their future tours, which will eventually decide the men in blue’s trajectory in WTC.

Gautam Gambhir optimistic on India’s successful run in WTC

Interestingly, during the press conference, head coach Gautam Gambhir said the current Indian red-ball side has all the tools to not only qualify for the WTC 2027 final but also win it.

Despite the team being in a transition phase and sitting at the sixth position on the WTC standings, Gambhir added that everyone in the dressing room believes India can win the trophy.

ā€œWe believe we can win the WTC. There is talent and hunger in this team. And we are always optimistic. Till you have the opportunity to qualify for the World Test Championship final, we’re always optimistic. I don’t think there’s any reason not to believe that we cannot win the World Test Championship. And that is what not only me, but everyone sitting in that dressing room believes in,ā€ Gambhir told the press.

It's important to note that India have played 9 Test matches in the ongoing cycle so far, winning 4 while losing 4 as well. Their last tour to England ended in a 2-2 draw.

Fans refuse to buy Gambhir’s hollow belief

Having said that, fans on social media had a different perspective as they refused to buy Gautam Gambhir’s far-fetched dream. Fans criticised Gambhir for selling fake promises, as they believe India have fallen out of the WTC final race.

Many believe that with India struggling to win even at home since last year, it’s difficult to get enough wins and points required to qualify for the WTC final, let alone win it.

Notably, India have never won a WTC title despite qualifying for the final twice. In WTC 2025, the men in blue missed their shot at playing the third successive final after losing the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia.

India to prepare for Sri Lanka tour during this Test

Also, even though the one-off Test against Afghanistan may not carry the prestige of an overseas series, Gautam Gambhir is clearly using it as part of a larger planning process.

He mentioned auditioning another left-arm spinner ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka, which suggests the management is already looking several months ahead rather than viewing this match in isolation.

This backs Gambhir’s earlier comments about WTC, as such development plans are done to prepare for the entire World Test Championship cycle rather than a single series.
