Smriti Mandhana's early milestone against Thailand turned into an unusually short stay at the crease as India Women began their Women's Asia Cup 2026 campaign.
Playing Thailand Women on August 30, 2026, Mandhana struck her first boundary to move past Suzie Bates' 10,740 international runs and become the second-highest run-scorer in women's international cricket, behind Mithali Raj's 10,868.
However, the record-breaking start quickly lost its shine as Smriti Mandhana departed for 19 off 10 balls, leaving India to recover without their star opener after a brief stay.

India would have expected Mandhana to make the most of the opportunity against Thailand, particularly given the gulf in experience between the two sides and her recent Hundred 2026 performance. Instead, her innings ended just as it appeared she was beginning to settle.
Mandhana started aggressively. She struck four boundaries in her first 10 balls, reaching 19 at a strike rate of 190. Her opening assault included two boundaries off Phannita Maya's second and third deliveries, followed by another four off the same bowler in the sixth ball.
However, on the third ball of the third over, Maya bowled a full delivery into Shafali Verma's pads. Verma flicked it towards deep midwicket and called for two. The second run was comfortably on, but Smriti Mandhana was slow in turning back for the second run.
Thailand's fielder Suwanchonrathi produced a sharp direct hit at the bowling end. Mandhana was found short of her crease after the replays were checked, bringing her innings to an abrupt end at 19 off 10 balls.

Mandhana's failure did not go down well with fans on social media, particularly after the expectations surrounding her as a potential next T20I captain of the team. Notably, this dismissal recorded the fact that after 12 years, Smriti Mandhana has been run out in two consecutive T20I innings.
Her previous back-to-back run-outs came against Bangladesh at Cox’s Bazar and Sri Lanka at Sylhet in 2014. Now it has happened against Australia at Lord’s and Thailand at Dubai in 2026. Nevertheless, although luck ran out for Mandhana, fans trolled her for her short stint.

Thailand Women's Team: A Surprising Nemesis For Mandhana
There is an interesting pattern hidden inside Mandhana's numbers against Thailand though. Thailand may be considered an underdog whenever it faces India, but Mandhana's record against them is surprisingly modest.
She has scored only 61 runs, including the 19-run knock in the Women's Asia Cup, across three T20I innings against Thailand, averaging just 20.33.
Mandhana is yet to score a half-century against Thailand in T20Is. Her best remains just 29. That is actually shocking when compared with her record against several other opponents.
Smriti Mandhana has scored 904 runs against Australia at an average of 32.28 and 985 against England at 36.48. She averages 60 against Ireland, 74 against the Netherlands and 36.33 against the West Indies.
Thailand, therefore, sits near the bottom of Mandhana's record against established international opponents, and that makes her repeated struggles against them noteworthy.
Interestingly, Mandhana isn't even India's leading run-scorer against Thailand. Shafali Verma has 114 runs in three matches, while Harmanpreet Kaur has 68 in three innings. Mandhana's 61 puts her third among Indian batters.
