South African cricket team have received a considerable blow after playing two matches in the ongoing Namibia Tri-Nation series. One of the pace stars from the Proteas squad has been ruled out of the remainder of the series.
For the unaware, the Proteas had a shocking defeat in their opening clash against Namibia on August 28 but bounced back with a 7-wicket win against Zimbabwe. However, now, ahead of their 3rd group stage match, against Namibia again on August 31, they lost one of their key pacers from the squad.
South Africa loses Lutho Sipamla due to injury; replacement announced
Lutho Sipamla has been ruled out of the entire T20I tri-series from the South Africa squad that has Eathan Bosch, Duan Jansen, Kwena Maphaka and Nqobani Mokoena as their other pace options. Sipamla suffered a left hamstring injury while playing Proteas’ first match against Namibia.
Sipamla bowled nine deliveries in that match and left the field while remaining wicketless. It is to be noted that no further official statement has been given by South Africa’s medical team on the extent of the injury or the timeline of his recovery.
Sipamla’s injury now becomes the third major concern after it was confirmed on Sunday that Kagiso Rabada will miss the ODIs against Australia and batter Jason Smith was also ruled out due to a groin injury. Importantly, though, Sipamla’s replacement has been announced by Cricket Proteas.

Who replaces Lutho Sipamla in the South Africa squad?
Andile Simelane has replaced Sipamla in the squad, as announced by the team management. For the unaware, Simelane have featured in 10 T20Is for the country. The 23-year-old all-rounder bowls right-arm fast and has been a decent performer with both the bat and the ball. He has 202 T20 runs and 34 scalps under his name.
Andile Simelane is expensive with the ball but is a strike bowler who can bring impact. He has a strike rate of 15.9 with the ball in T20 format and has most recently played an Emerging tournament representing the Proteas against Bangladesh while bagging fifers and four-fers in the two consecutive games he featured on August 16 and August 23.
For how long will the injury hamper Lutho Sipamla?
Lutho Sipamla hasn't been super impressive with the ball in his recent stints. His MLC 2026 performances and New Zealand series have also been underwhelming. He had an opportunity to redeem himself with the ball in the Namibia series.
The opportunity is lost now, and with hamstring injuries for bowlers requiring at least two weeks of recovery period, it is expected that Sipamla will be out of the Proteas main Playing XI plans for a long time.
The Namibia tri-series concludes on September 4, with the Namibia ODI tour beginning on the 9th of the same month. Hence, Sipamla’s injury rules out the possibility of him featuring in the Namibia series immediately after, and it leaves him with a hope of only joining the squad for the Australia tour, which begins later in the month of September 27th onwards.
Sipamla’s chances are fair for Australia since Rabada’s injury has now placed him in doubt for a place in the squad for the all-important white-ball and red-ball series. Lutho Sipamla have played 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and 15 T20Is for his nation, bagging a total of 24 international wickets.
