India Women displayed a poor fielding display during their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Group A match against Bangladesh Women at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

Bangladesh opted to bat first and made the most of several lifelines offered by the Indian fielders during the powerplay. Despite Renuka Singh removing Dilara Akter early, Bangladesh reached 40/1 in the first six overs and moved to 55/1 after 8.2 overs.

The dropped chances allowed Juairiya Ferdous and Sobhana Mostary to settle at the crease and push India on the back foot after the errors.

The Importance of the IND-W vs BAN-W Match!

The Group A match between India and Bangladesh holds major importance in the race for the semifinals. Australia have already secured qualification from the group, leaving India, South Africa and Bangladesh competing for the remaining knockout berth.

India entered the match with two wins from three games and a healthy net run rate, while Bangladesh also had four points from three matches. A victory would strengthen either side's chances of advancing to the final four.

In such a high-pressure fixture, fielding standards become critical, making India's mistakes in the powerplay even more costly.

The Series Of Costly Catch Drops From India

India dropped four catches inside the first five overs of Bangladesh's innings. The first chance came in the third over when Juairiya Ferdous attempted a sweep against Shree Charani. The ball took a top edge and travelled towards square leg, where Yastika Bhatia ran in from short fine leg. She got a finger on the ball after a diving effort but could not complete the catch.

Another opportunity arrived in the fifth over. Sobhana Mostary miscued a drive off Charani and offered a chance to Nandni Sharma at cover. The fielder moved to her left and got both hands to the ball but failed to hold on.

Just one delivery later, Juairiya survived again. Attempting a slog sweep against Charani, she top-edged the ball towards short third. Nandni Sharma covered good ground and dived but could not complete the catch.

The fourth drop came in the next over when Juairiya pulled Renuka Singh towards deep mid-wicket. Radha Yadav settled underneath what appeared to be a straightforward chance but grassed the catch, allowing the batter another life.

The internet didn’t spare the cricketers as a frenzy of backlash spread across soon:

Bangladesh In An Advantageous Position After India’s Gift

Bangladesh capitalised on every opportunity handed to them. Juairiya Ferdous, who survived three separate chances, made India pay with a fluent innings during the powerplay. She struck boundaries against both pace and spin and remained unbeaten on 32 from 29 balls after 8.2 overs.

Sobhana Mostary also benefited from a dropped chance and supported Juairiya with an unbeaten 15. Their partnership helped Bangladesh recover from the early loss of Dilara Akter and maintain a healthy scoring rate.

With wickets in hand and the platform established, Bangladesh placed themselves in a strong position heading into the middle overs.

Unwanted Catch-Dropping Record For India

India's fielding effort also resulted in an unwanted tournament record. There have been only two instances of a team dropping more than three catches inside the first six overs of an innings during the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026, and now both instances belong to India.

The Indian side dropped three catches against Pakistan earlier in the tournament at Edgbaston. Against Bangladesh in Manchester, they went one worse by dropping four catches within the first five overs.

India On The Back Foot After Costly Errors

India's bowlers created enough opportunities to put Bangladesh under pressure early in the innings. The fielders, however, failed to convert those chances.

Renuka Singh's wicket of Dilara Akter briefly gave India control, yet the repeated missed opportunities allowed Bangladesh's batters to rebuild and attack with confidence.

In a match that could influence semifinal qualification, India's fielding lapses handed Bangladesh valuable momentum, one, which the team would like to double down onto.
