CSK formally announced fast bowler Spencer Johsnon as a replacement for injured Nathan Ellis for IPL 2026. However, in an unexpected twist, Johnson will join the squad only after April 20, as he is also struggling with a niggle.

For context, Ellis injured his hamstring, and the niggle worsened during a domestic match in Australia, which eventually ruled him out of the IPL 2026 season, thus forcing CSK to opt for replacements.

CSK sign Spencer Johnson for IPL 2026, face backlash

To fill Nathan Ellis’ void, the Chennai Super Kings had to bring in a replacement overseas pacer. However, out of all options, they went with Spencer Johsnon.

The move raised a lot of eyebrows, as Johnson is also not fully fit. He is recovering from a back stress fracture and hasn’t played competitive cricket since IPL 2025.

Johnson is currently bowling at around 60% intensity and will only join CSK formally around April 21-22. This clearly means that Spencer Johsnon won’t be available for the initial phase of IPL 2026.

Naturally, fans called out the Chennai Super Kings management for signing an injured player as an injury replacement. The move didn’t make sense at all and left die-hard Chennai fans baffled.

Supporters questioned the logic behind the call, pointing out that CSK may not get immediate value from the signing, especially during the crucial early phase of the tournament.

Some fans even joked that the franchise is stockpiling injured pacers, while others expressed concern over the team’s pace-bowling depth.

Why did CSK choose Spencer Johsnon?

To make sense of CSK’s move, Spencer Johsnon has proven T20 experience under his belt. His left-arm angle will add variety to Chennai’s bowling arsenal.

Also, Johnson is a low-risk, short-term option who can make a difference later in the tournament. As for his IPL experience, Spencer Johnson previously played for the Gujarat Titans and KKR, taking 5 wickets combined.

Overall, Chennai Super Kings are taking a calculated gamble. Instead of short-term availability, they are betting on Spencer Johnson being fit and effective later in the season. But it’s a move that could backfire if injuries persist.

Johnson ditched the PSL for the IPL

Interestingly, Spencer Johsnon had initially signed for PSL 2026. However, he later pulled out, citing personal reasons. But now, his Chennai Super Kings move has raised a lot of questions.

This year, a lot of foreign players have ditched the PSL at the last moment to fetch IPL contracts, as both leagues will be clashing. Earlier, Dasun Shanaka and Blessing Muzarabani also pulled off a similar move, prompting a strong reaction from the PCB.

PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi warned foreign players of strict action for breach of contract, which may include an immediate ban from PSL. However, for now, Spencer Johsnon has made his decision and will play IPL 2026 for CSK.
