The second and final Test between India and Sri Lanka ended in a dramatic draw and also prevented the Shubman Gill-led team from completing a 2-0 series sweep.
The visitors won the two-match series 1-0 after their impressive victory in the first Test at Galle, but the drawn result in the IND vs SL 2nd Test could prove costly considering the World Test Championship (WTC) campaign.

India remain in 5th position in the updated WTC 2025–27 standings. They have now played 11 Tests, winning five, losing four and drawing two. India have 68 points with a points percentage of 51.52%.
Australia lead the table with 80%, followed by South Africa at 75%, New Zealand at 72.22% and Bangladesh at 55.56%. Sri Lanka remains sixth with 24 points and a points percentage of 33.33%.

Talking about the IND vs SL 2nd Test, the visitors had declared their first innings at 503/9 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 290, securing a 213-run lead. India then enforced the follow-on, putting themselves in a strong position to push for victory.
However, Sri Lanka produced a determined batting effort in their second innings. The hosts eventually declared at 429/9, leaving India without enough time to complete the victory. The two teams eventually shook hands on a draw.
Sonal Dinusha was the star for Sri Lanka and also played a crucial role in the second innings. He remained unbeaten on 133 runs off 264 balls at a strike rate of 50.38. It is vital to note that overall in the IND vs SL Test series, the 25-year-old made 481 runs in 6 innings at an average of 96.20 and a strike rate of 59.53.
How Can India Qualify For The WTC 2025-27 Final After The Draw vs SL In The 2nd Test?
It is worth noting that India still has 7 Tests remaining in the current World Test Championship cycle (two against New Zealand and five against Australia).
After the draw against Sri Lanka in the 2nd Test, India’s maximum possible points percentage has dropped to around 70.37%. This means that the two-match Test series of India's tour of New Zealand 2026 and Australia's tour of India 2027 (BGT) will be extremely important.
To remain in the contention for the WTC 2025-27 final, India must win as many of the remaining seven Tests as possible. Winning 6/7 matches would also give India a strong chance of reaching the final; anything below that would make things difficult for the Shubman Gill-led team.
