Chennai Super Kings fans are eagerly waiting to see MS Dhoni back in action. However, the mystery around his absence in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) season continues to grow.
As CSK prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, there is fresh discussion about whether this could be Dhoni’s final appearance opportunity in Chennai.
Notably, this match will be CSK's last home game of the league stage. Therefore, fans are emotional and hopeful that the former India captain might finally step onto the field this season.
MS Dhoni Stayed Back Despite Being Fit
It is important to note that MS Dhoni was ruled out at the beginning of the IPL 2026 after suffering a calf injury during pre-season training. While the injury initially kept him away from the squad, reports later suggested that he had recovered and was available for selection.
However, despite being fit, MS Dhoni did not return to the playing XI. Sources claimed that the former CSK captain chose not to disturb the team combination at a crucial stage of the tournament.
Notably, during practice sessions, Dhoni was also seen playing football comfortably, which further hinted that fitness was no longer a major concern.

CSK Still Fighting For Playoff Spot
Even after a mixed campaign, CSK remain in the playoff race. The five-time champions are currently placed sixth on the points table with 12 points from 12 matches and a net run rate of 0.027.
To keep their playoff hopes alive, CSK must win both of their remaining matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans. However, winning alone may not be enough, as net run rate could also decide whether they qualify for the next round.
At the same time, pressure is increasing after their recent seven-wicket defeat against LSG at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. Interestingly, MS Dhoni was expected to travel with the squad for that game, but he eventually stayed back in Chennai.
Will CSK Fans Witness MS Dhoni One More Time?
As the tournament enters its final phase, speculation around Dhoni’s return has become stronger. According to CricBlogger reports, the Indian legend may only play if he believes his presence can genuinely improve CSK’s chances of reaching the playoffs.
“If he is ready to play the last games, he has to be convinced that his presence can make a difference to Chennai Super Kings’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs,” the source told CricBlogger.
This has also raised questions about his future in the IPL. Since Dhoni has not played a game this season, many fans fear that they may have already seen his last appearance in CSK colours.
Still, there is no official statement regarding retirement. Notably, reports suggest that the CSK management would be happy to have him continue for another season.
