Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have received a major update on Phil Salt ahead of their important IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 17 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

The defending champions are currently sitting at the top of the points table (with 16 Points) and are very close to confirming their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs. Under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, RCB have looked dominant this season and have already registered eight wins.

However, the franchise has been dealing with the absence of explosive England batter Phil Salt, who has missed several matches due to injury.

What has happened to Phil Salt?

Phil Salt last played for RCB against Delhi Capitals on April 18 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The wicketkeeper-batter suffered a finger injury, which forced him out of the tournament temporarily.

Following the injury, Salt returned to the United Kingdom (UK) to recover and continue his rehab. His absence has been a concern for RCB, especially with the playoffs approaching, as he played a key role in the team's title-winning campaign last season (IPL 2025).

Latest Update on Phil Salt's injury and availability for RCB

In a significant development, Phil Salt has now been ruled out of the remaining IPL 2026 league-stage matches. The England star will continue his recovery in the UK and is not expected to return before the playoffs.

According to a report by HT journalist Vishesh Roy, Salt is likely to rejoin the RCB squad for the IPL 2026 playoffs (if RCB qualifies).

In his absence, young batter Jacob Bethell has been included in the playing XI and has been opening the innings for RCB.

Phil Salt's performance for RCB before injury

It is important to note that before the injury, Phil Salt played 6 innings and scored 202 runs at an average of 33.67 and a strike rate of 168.33. His best performance came against Mumbai Indians in the 20th match; the star batter made 78 runs off 36 balls at a strike rate of 216.67.

On the other hand, in his absence, Jacob Bethell has been playing as an opener for RCB. However, Bethell has not been able to make a major impact so far. The star player has played in 6 matches and has scored 85 runs at an average of 14.16 and a strike-rate of 121.42.

How can RCB qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs?

It is vital to note that the RCB's qualification for the IPL 2026 playoffs is very simple. With a strong Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.053, the team is in a solid position to qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

If RCB win 1 or both remaining matches:

  • RCB will officially qualify for the playoffs. Winning both games could also help them secure a top-2 finish, giving them an extra chance in the playoffs.

If RCB lose both matches:

  • Even then, RCB are still highly likely to qualify because of their excellent NRR. They would only be in danger if multiple teams, such as Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings, improve their NRR significantly.
